An amended “class action complaint” has been filed against Purina’s Beneful Dog Food. The amended complaint lists some very serious concerns with this pet food.
The press release announcing the amended complaint against Beneful Dog Food states:
“The complaint, brought in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that Purina failed to disclose that Beneful contains substances that are toxic to animals, including Industrial Grade Glycols (IGG), lead, arsenic and mycotoxins.”
Industrial grade propylene glycol is not allowed – by FDA – into animal feed (pet food). This ingredient was on the FDA’s radar when they investigated jerky treat manufacturing facilities in China (as a possible cause for pet illness and deaths linked to the Chinese jerky treats). This ingredient being added to the amended complaint against Beneful is very concerning.
The press release also states:
“The suit also alleges Purina has been contacting injured consumers soon after they post on social media about their dogs getting sick or the dangers of Beneful. Plaintiffs claim that Purina offers some consumers a settlement that requires them to sign an agreement prohibiting any conversations about the settlement or their experiences with Purina.”

Purina Pet Food started the website PetFoodHonesty.com after the company initiated a lawsuit against Blue Buffalo Pet Food advertising claims. As evidence in the Purina vs. Blue lawsuit became public, we learned that Blue Buffalo did indeed use by-products in their pet foods just as Purina claimed.
The question is, what will pet food consumers learn about ‘Pet Food Honesty’ as this class action lawsuit against Purina Beneful moves forward?
My sympathies go out to all pet food consumers who lost a pet linked to this pet food. I’m sure reading that Beneful is alleged to have contained industrial (illegal) grade ingredients, lead, arsenic and mycotoxins magnifies the heartache you experienced. Let us hope that consumers will be provided with all evidence as this trial moves forward. We deserve to know.
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,
