Worldwide retail sales of dog and cat food topped US $45 billion in 2007. Here is a list of the top five pet food producers in the world.
Del Monte Foods is the world’s fifth largest pet food producer with $1.7 billion dollars in sales for 2007. The California based company produces the brands Meow Mix, Kibbles n’ Bits, 9Lives, Milk-Bone, Pup-Peroni, Pounce, Gravy Train, Jerky Treats, Canine Carry Outs, Snausages, Nature’s Recipe (Cat and Dog), Alley Cat, and Meaty Bone.
The forth largest pet food producer in the world is Proctor & Gamble producing the Iams and Eukanuba brands. Approximate 2007 sales for pet food is $2.99 billion.
Barely in front of P & G is Colgate-Palmolive, producing the Hill’s Science Diet and Hill’s Prescription Diet pet food brands. Approximate 2007 sales for pet food is $3 billion.
More than tripling sales of Hill’s is Nestle, with approximately $10.9 billion in sales during 2007. Nestle’s top brands are Purina, Purina One, Alpo, Beneful, Deli-Cat, Dog Chow, Fancy Feast, Friskies, HiPro, Kibbles and Chunks, Kit ‘N Kaboodle, Mighty Dog, Pro Plan, TBonz, Purina Veterinary Diets, and Whisker Lickin’s.
The world leader in pet food sales goes to Mars, Inc. The top brands for Mars, Inc are Pedigree, Cesar, Sheba, Nutro, Goodlife Recipe, Whiskas, Greenies, and Royal Canin. Approximate 2007 sales $11.8 billion.
Mars Petcare launched 254 new products in 2008; 248 of those were dog products. There are more varieties of Pedigree dog food than any other pet food brand in the US.
