Unfortunately, we can only look at the surface changes of these pet foods. We do not know if new owners changed the quality of ingredients (from food quality to feed quality or from feed to food). Current regulations do not require pet food manufacturers to disclose quality of ingredients.

Despite pet foods compositions being simplistic and consistent, many
of the tested foods were adulterated (Tables 1, 2). Here, the term adulteration is defined as foods that included DNA from animals or plants that were not listed in the package ingredient list as well as foods that did not include DNA from animals or plants that were listed in the package ingredient list. These results are consistent with those from Palumbo et al. (2020), that showed 16 of the 18 tested commercial pet foods were adulterated.

Both studies revealed that ingredients with higher economic value (e.g., fish) are often supplemented with or altogether replaced by ingredients of lower economic value (e.g., chicken). This raises concerns that consumers are paying unfair prices for products that purportedly contain high value ingredients, but actually contain low value ingredients. The prevalence of adulteration in commercial pet foods is also of concern for pets with life-threatening food allergies.

Such allergies are becoming more common in pets, with beef, chicken,
wheat, and dairy-based ingredients reported as the most common food
allergens (Mueller et al., 2016). If a consumer cannot trust that a pet food product is free of these allergens, despite the package label, then pet lives are at risk and trust in the pet food industry is severely eroded.

I’m surprised. Not that any kibble is great, especially for cats, but a few of these actually look at first glance like they changed for the better while Mars and Nexus capital Mgmnt got worse. Seriously, alfalfa meal for cats? Not as bad as corn but still. And people wonder why so many cats are on thyroid medication… 🙁 That was a lot of work, thank you Susan!

I wonder what this ingredient (probiotic) was doing in kibble for dogs: “Enterococcus faecium” and if it was replaced with the vaguely named “dried Bacillus coagulans fermentation product” considering this: “Enterococcus faecium has been a leading cause of multi-drug resistant enterococcal infections over Enterococcus faecalis in the United States.” There is an interesting article about the claims pet food companies make with re to containing certain strains of probiotics: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC340078/
