Next AAFCO Meeting Begins January 18, 2022

This next AAFCO meeting will be in person, the first in person meeting in two years.

This next AAFCO meeting will be in person, the first in person meeting in two years.

Pet owners can listen to the meeting for no charge, but cannot make any comments. AAFCO isn’t clear on how consumers can access the meeting, they only stateThe connection to access this complimentary feature will be available on the AAFCO website on January 14.” It is unknown if AAFCO will provide a link to listen to the meeting on their homepage or on the meeting page.

The session that is of the most interest to pet food consumers is the Pet Food Committee session taking place Wednesday January 19th, 2022 – 1:15 to 3:15 PM EDT. During this session there will be discussion on Human Grade pet food guidelines, a discussion from FDA regarding copper levels in pet food, and an update from AAFCO regarding pet food label modernization.

All three of these issues are of concern to pet owners. We have been concerned that AAFCO will try to minimize the existing high standards of Human Grade pet food. With copper levels in pet food, two recent studies have shown copper toxicity in pets. Thus far, AAFCO and FDA have dismissed these studies. And with pet food label modernization, this is an issue that AAFCO has been working on for at least ten years (with no end in sight).

We will be attending the meeting in person and will be providing consumers updates on all the discussions after the meeting is over.

Wishing you and your pet the best –
