Germany has become the sixth European Union nation to ban a genetically modified corn manufactured by U.S. biotech Monsanto; the only GM crop permitted until now in the country.
A press release published by The-Scientist.com website Tuesday April 14,2009 reports that German has banned a type of genetically modified corn manufactured by Monsanto. “Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner told reporters she was outlawing the cultivation of MON 810 maize — modified to be super resistant against crop-destroying insects — on environmental grounds.”
The release continues “The decision underlines political heavyweight Germany’s role in the camp of European countries skeptical about genetically-modified produce — dubbed Frankenfoods by their opponents. Germany is the sixth EU country to introduce a provisional ban on MON 810, following similar action taken by France, Austria, Hungary, Luxembourg and Greece.” http://www.the-scientist.com/community/posts/list/0/454.page
The U.S. FDA on the other hand, told Monsanto in 1996 MON 810 was “not materially different in composition, safety, and other relevant parameters from corn currently on the market and that the genetically modified corn does not raise issues that would require premarket review or approval by FDA.” http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~rdb/bnfl034.html
The FDA does not require pet food or human food labels to inform consumers if a product contains a GM grain.
We can only hope that one day our elected Representatives in Washington will consider the interests of citizens (and our pets) over the concerns of industries.
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,
