Coincidence? or…?

Did it just happened that Salmonella kibble recalls dropped to zero AFTER the FDA met with Mars, Purina and Pet Food Institute?

Did it just happened that Salmonella kibble recalls dropped to zero AFTER the FDA met with Mars, Purina and Pet Food Institute?

In January of 2014, the top brass at FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine hosted a meeting with Mars, Purina, and their trade association Pet Food Institute. From Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) documents recently received about the meeting, the discussion topic was Salmonella in pet food.

In the two years preceding this meeting with FDA, Members of the Pet Food Institute had experienced a couple of recall filled years for Salmonella in kibble/dry pet foods with 14 different recalls. By comparison, the raw pet food category experienced two recalls in the same two year time frame.

But after this meeting, recalls just happened to make a dramatic change. Kibble recalls dropped to just 3 in the same year (2014), 1 in 2015, and zero in every year since. And…it just happened that raw pet food recalls soared after that meeting.

Did this dramatic shift in recalls just happen?

Or is the FDA practicing even more ‘enforcement discretion’ to help their Big Pet Feed friends?

Should you wish to voice your opinion to FDA on this issue, reference FOIA 2018-7997 – email FDA at AskCVM@fda.hhs.gov.

I wonder what would happen if the consumers started to complain about getting Salmonella from handling the dog food, would FDA take action than? I’m only guessing that one could get salmonella from handling the product?

I’m sure we could potentially get salmonella that way. It may have happened somewhere already and no one would think to look there. I guess we should be diligent about hand washing after handling pet food just in case.

What do you expect from an administration that is corrupt from top-down? Pets and people are merely pawns in the profit-driven business world.

This involves every administration – for decades. Not one has done the right thing for pets.

Yes, the FDA is suspect in this. They have been using their “discretion” to aid and abet their buddies in the kibble industry for YEARS. Tales abound of their collection methods with raw food: from selection to handling and this is nothing new. Ever since raw food has taken an upswing and punched a hole in the profits of big kibble, we’ve seen more “witch hunts” of raw and more protection of kibble. Infuriating but hardly surprising. We appreciate what you do, Susan!

All government agencies are corrupt! Nothing new. Don’t think it will change in our lifetime. But we thank you Susan for providing pet parents with all your informative articles which helps us make better decisions.
