Dated November 22, 2024, the FDA just made available a warning letter issued to Mid America Pet Food. The FDA warning letter is in reference to follow up inspections after Mid America experienced three recalls in 2023, in September, October, and November. All of these recalls were for Salmonella contamination.
The FDA stated the Mid America pet foods were confirmed linked to human illnesses; “A total of seven people from seven states were infected with the outbreak strain from January 14, 2023 to August 19, 2023, and one person was hospitalized.”
During FDA inspections of the Mid America manufacturing facility, “FDA collected environmental samples (i.e., swabs) from surfaces in your manufacturing.” FDA swabs found Salmonella positive results, “indicating that your facility may have three resident strains of Salmonella: Salmonella Rissen, Salmonella Minnesota, and Salmonella Mbandaka.”
“During these inspections FDA Investigators found evidence of significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals requirements.”
“FDA Investigators observed rainwater entering your facility through the roof while you were manufacturing multiple lots of dog food.“
“FDA Investigators observed sanitation deficiencies persisted through the January to February 2024 inspection.”
And the Warning Letter included FDA’s statement to Mid America regarding the pet food manufacturer’s corrective actions taken to prevent another recall; “your root cause analysis does not consider how you will reduce the likelihood the problem will recur.“

For anyone wondering who MidAmerica is, brands manufactured by them include Nature’s Logic, Victor, Eagle Mountain, and Wayne Feeds. https://mapf.com/our-brands
The inclusion of Nature’s Logic here is a big deal, as that is a food commonly recommended by “holistic” pet stores (and fed by their employees, thanks to an incentive program).

Oh brother. I had gone with Nature’s Logic because of no synthetic vitamins, no corn, wheat or potatoes and they had no recalls. Back to the drawing board and ordering the new list of recommended foods.

Nature’s Logic is owned by MidAmerica, but it’s being manufactured by a third party in a different facility. There are plans for MA to start producing it in the same facility as Victor in the future.
