OMGOD…I am so appalled at this article on what people have found in the pet food! One good reason I don’t buy ANY of the brands listed. But I’m sure this could happen to any, since I had to deal with toxic dog food from Acana. All for the privilege of paying top dollar. Ewe. Thank you, Susan, for all you do and keeping us informed as well as on the look out!

I’ll add another company that really disillusioned me. Zignature. I was having cases of their canned food shipped regularly for my emergency stock. I rotated my “stock” and would feed my three Shih Tzus a can for breakfast occasionally until a case was used up – they are home cooked for most meals. They were stored safely in a dry basement still in the shrink wrapped packaging and I would carry up a case to use. Then came the day when my kitchen filled up with gnats or fruit flies or some such pest. I was going crazy trying to figure out where they were coming from. Prior to this I was getting cans that were dented but some seemed ok, some smashed beyond use, and then I found the can in the middle of a case in the pantry that was so damaged that the contents were mouldy and oozing these bugs. I checked the rest of my 4 cases, all with good expiration dates and every single can in every single case was dented in the same way on the top of the can – where the lid seal can be compromised. Some were not leaking, some were. I contacted Zignature complete with pictures and was told that it couldn’t possibly be a manufacturing problem – BTW they don’t do their own manufacturing – it had to be from shipping and they have no control once it leaves their possession – their term “uncontrolled substance”. That kind of consistent damage had to be from canning equipment, not delivery. I was offered a free case, all I had to do was tell them which pet supply store I wanted to drive out of my way to pick it up. I told them to stuff their food. In addition, I started finding big greasy globs of something in the cans that weren’t leaking.

I manage a small independent pet supply store in central Florida, and we carry a SMALL selection of Pro Plan only to fill demand, as we have customers that prefer it and would rather buy it from us than competitors.
We have had three bags come back in the last two months, LARGE bags at that, that were returned because they were absolutely RIDDLED with multiple species of larvae. After reporting it to our distributor, that freely admitted that this had been an occurring issue for YEARS (I can attest to that from my time as a PCM for PetSmart), and that the primary reason they changed the design of their packaging was specifically to mitigate the growth of bugs within their packages on the production line.
Needless to say, I wasn’t exactly shocked. And I’m more than happy to let customers know of that issue if it means getting them off of Pro Plan.

Not surprised in the least about Evanger’s response. My impression is that they are very unethical. They have a long list of FDA citations, including absence of stated ingredients, pentobarbital in their food resulting in pet deaths, gross unsanitary conditions, and they were charged with utility theft.

OMG these companies need to be sued. Horrible & disgusting that these products are being sold & offered to pets. Obviously there is no Internal Controls! I will never feed my dog & cat these brands. Thanks for sharing!

Susan, You can try to use nitter.net to view twitter posts from Evangers etc. It’s a great tool for viewing twitter posts without having an account and being tracked.

I very recently found a good sized piece of blue plastic in my cat’s Small Batch frozen raw. They said that’s what the meat is wrapped in when received from the supplier and it probably got caught in a creased section of meat and was overlooked by Small Batch quality control. Looking at these pictures I suppose I’m lucky as it could have been worse. However, it has me rethinking home cooking.
