In light of the recent pet food recalls, I’ve been asked to compile a list of pet food companies and the products they manufacture.
It is common in pet food to use ‘co-packers’. As an example, ABC Pet Food is a pet food company but they do not have their own manufacturing facility. Instead, ABC Pet Food provides their own exclusive recipes to XYZ Pets, a pet food co-packer. XYZ Pets manufactures ABC’s pet food along with several other brands. The following list is manufacturers along with the pet foods they produce.
Bold font implies the pet food manufacturer; products listed below are pet foods made by that manufacturer.

Red Moon is listed under Not Revealed by Pet Food Company but it’s also listed under Barrett AG Service. Perhaps it should be removed from the Not Revealed list(?).

Not necessarily, as there are many different mfg’s for a single brand – depending on whether its dry or can (& sometimes the type/ flavor or grain free or not) of dry or can. Scan thru & you’ll see some brands do indeed have several mfg’s – Blue for one, Canidae, Evangers etc

I just discovered Walmart sells a brand now called Pure Balance, and after some Googling it appears to be manufactured by Ainsworth. It is corn, soy, and wheat free. Can you confirm this? My instinct says to never trust pet food from Walmart, but am interested in hearing more about it because I’m hoping this means they’re starting to care.

It seems Blue Buffalo has their own plants in Missouri and Indiana yet you list them under Ainsworth??? Also, in speaking with them Natural Balance tells us they contract thru Smuckers yet you list them differently??? Please explain…

I’m a secret source who will let you know about some info on pet food companies. I will not reveal who I am but I can assure you my info is reliable.
Halo is copacked by the following vendors
Fromm makes their kibble
Menu makes their cans
Cardinal makes some of their grooming supplements
Party Animal is made at Evengers. (you can tell by picking up a can. Evengers prints on the can while the can is rolling causing the lot number to have curved writing)

I’m sorry, but I believe you are misinformed, at least on the Fromm information. Fromm does not co-pack for anyone. I have heard that Halo has lied and said that they do, but a quick call to Fromm will tell you that is absolutely not the case. Please verify before passing along incorrect information.

Fromm does indeed co-pack. They manufacture Halo dry. My husband works for Halo distributing and they get trucks in from Fromm with the dry on it. Fromm is also known as All Pet and they co-pack for more than one company. They are under contract to not tell you that they do, in fact co-pack. Halo is also manufactured by HyTek Foods in Georgia, Menu Foods (Canned – they used to use Vietti), Performance Pet (Canned) and treats come from Stella & Chewys, and a few other places. Merrick also co-packs for different brands. The person above missed a few places. I have no problem telling you who I am because I can’t get in trouble for saying LOL. Halo is stored and distributed out of TN and I can tell you who packs what if you want to know…

Their brand names are Wellness, Holistic Select, Eagle Pack, Prism, Hy-Ration, Old Mother Hubbard, Holistix, and (previously) Neura Meats. The company is a fully owned subsidiary of Berwind Corporation, along with (among others) Elmer’s Glue and the National Pen Company.

This subject has got to be one of the most discussed in all of pet food consumerism. Most manufacturers will give you the names of the facilities they use after calling or emailing. I’ve never tried Fromm, as they don’t have a novel protein line, but they’re still listed in the “not known yet” category above.
Their website here states: http://frommfamily.com/faq/where-is-fromm-made
“Our can foods are made in the USA at a USDA-inspected plant in South Dakota.”
A Google search results in a company called the American Foods Group which has a facility in South Dakota.
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:H0rox1RiwH0J:www.americanfoodsgroup.com/page.asp%3Fpageid%3D88+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a
“Performance Pet Products is a leading producer of natural dog treats and super premium canned pet food. All products are human grade and made in the USA….Our commitment to the production of human grade canned dog and cat food has made us the fastest growing provider of corporate brand products and co-pack services. We provide product to many leading high-end dog and cat food brands.”
I’m not sure if this is who cans Fromm, but it sounds logical if they use a facility in South Dakota. Performance also has their own brand of pet food..
Two other brands I don’t see listed above are Addiction and Wild Calling which is fairly new. I haven’t seen many reviews of Wild Calling, although if you look at their site, the ingredients listed appear to be natural.
http://wildcalling.com/
I’m pretty sure that both Addiction and Wild Calling are canned by Evangers in the USA. Several years ago, I ordered a case of Addiction Rabbit and many of the cans had some sort of black crud on the bottom and the top ridges, which I had to clean off with cotton swabs. When I was thinking of buying a few cans of Wild Calling Rabbit Burrow a few months ago, I noticed the same kind of black crud on the bottom of the can, I thought that it mus be from Evangers’ plant. Sure enough, an email confirmed it.

I’m told that the Canidae Pure canned are NOT from Evangers and I surely hope that is true because that is one company I won’t give business to, even indirectly. I have a toothless dog with constipation issues and two of the Pure’s are the only foods that seems to work really well for her.

Just an FYI, while Royal Canin is under the Mars Petcare umbrella, it is NOT manufactured in the same facility as the other Mars Petcare products. Royal Canin globally manufacturers it’s own products in its own Royal Canin production facility. You can call Royal Canin directly to confirm this information. For Canada the production facility is in Guelph Ontario, and like all the global Royal Canin plants makes safety and quality a priority in production.

Maybe some of you have forgotten, but Fromm use to have their canned food line manufactured in China. When I called to question the company about this they stated that it was “a human grade processing plant”. And so were the plants that manufactured the baby formulas that had added melamine and killed a reported six babies. Fromm has since moved its processing to the united states but it took me five years before I could even buy the dry kibble from them. Knowing that they once outsourced their canned food production to China- I wont ever buy their canned food again.

I think it’s been posted before with another article here, but Nature’s Variety now states their rabbit protein for cats and dogs is no longer sourced from China. They said that they’re now obtaining it from France. It started a few months ago, but they wanted to make sure all the old cans were off the shelves before announcing it.

great list !
do you know who manufacturers the brand “Vets Choice Health Extension” ?
Annie
November 3, 2014 at 11:02 am
Flint River Ranch manufactures their own dog/cat foods, and has never been involved in a recall.
Del Monte’s pet food division was bought by Big Heart Pet Brands, located in San Francisco. Big Hearts is the manufacturer for Del Monte’s pet division feeds.
Halo: this is what I found: “Description of Products: Manufacturer and distributor of all-natural, human-grade, holistic pet care products for dogs, cats & birds including USDA-approved food and treats, herbal grooming aids, and healthy supplements.” This from Whole Foods Magazine.
Newman’s self manufactures.
Vets Choice ‘seems’ as though they self-manufacture. I would send them an email and pointedly ask. If they balk, move on.
This is all I can assist with at this time. I am an IT manager, so research is my lively-hood.

Halo is on the unrevealed list and they refused to tell me when I asked them which I why I quit buying their food completely. Any time a company wants that kept hidden it’s not for a good reason. I googled their address and it’s a tiny office in a shopping plaza. I ordered from them by mail and guess what? The package was shipped from a plant in Lebanon, TN I googled the address and BINGO the NUTRO plant. They are the only pet food plant in Lebanon, TN.

One more thing. The woman who invented Halo Spot’s Stew told me in an email that the reason she cut ties with them is because they reformulated the food and she didn’t like what was going into it because it didn’t fit in with her wishes for the product.

I’ve heard rumors like this from time to time, and finally did some research since starting to feed my pups Health Extension dry food. Apparently there was a loose affiliation that hasn’t existed in at least 5 years. And before that, the company/owners did not support any mills, but a few people were upset that some bad breeders were purchasing the food. Since a dog food company can’t go store to store telling them all to ban a specific person, there wasn’t much they could do. My dog’s love it, and it has a 4 – 4 1/2 out of 5 rating on DogFoodAdvisor, so I’m happy! I wouldn’t worry about hearsay.

Calorie Content:
Metabolizable Energy (calculated) 3,570 kcal/kg : 365 kcal/cup
Carbohydrates: 46.5%
— I am totally shocked that they’re even putting the carbohydrate % on their website like that – most pet food manufacturers, unless the carb percentage is really good (meaning, it’s really low), they try to avoid saying what it is, because… odds are, they know that carbs are actually not all that good, or necessary for dogs and cats, and thus stating how insanely high their carb percent is would only deter people from buying their products. It’s interesting to me that this company states the carbs there, even though the 46.5% is really, really high (but is not that much different from most other brands of dog food out there that claim to be great, but really aren’t). —
Obviously everyone has their own opinions on the multitude of brands of pet food out there, everyone has different experiences with them and different views on everything, so my opinion of this food may not match up with someone else’s, but this is how I feel about this food, based on what I’m seeing on their site (and my opinion is with the mindset of, “Would I feed this food to my own dog?” because I never give someone else advice or input that I wouldn’t give or use for myself, for my own pets):
*** The ingredient list is nothing impressive, really. If I had to decide whether or not to feed this to my dog, based on the ingredient list, I would say no, for a few reasons. One, I don’t like that there are no whole meat proteins in there. Sure, the whole meat source has water and whatnot, which increases the weight of the ingredient, but as long as I see other meat sources on the list too, then that’s okay. Moisture isn’t a bad thing, so it shouldn’t be seen as such, provided other ingredients complement this meat ingredient. Ideally, since the formula doesn’t appear to be geared for any sort of ‘limited ingredient’ or ‘sensitive stomach/skin’ sort of thing, I’m disappointed that the ONLY meat source is chicken. I hate seeing chicken on food labels nowadays. It’s everywhere. I can’t even count how many people I’ve helped over the years, that I recommended them switching their dogs to a completely chicken-free diet, and then having them come back to me a few months later, insanely happy and appreciative that I gave them that advice, that their dog’s issues completely disappeared once they removed chicken from their diet. I try to avoid chicken in my dog’s diet as well, just because it’s already in most things – treats, foods, it’s a common human food item that’s given to dogs, etc – so why add insult to injury and have it in her dog food as well? So to avoid sensitivity issues now, or later in life, I avoid it in her food. Second big issue: What’s with all the damn rice? Geez, I feel like I’m looking at the ingredient list for something at Panda Express… Lol. Seeing only one meat protein ingredient (chicken meal) and then multiple rice and grain ingredients following it, tells me that they are trying to substitute the right protein sources for dogs (meat) with less adequate grain proteins, which don’t contain all of the amino acids that our dogs need to stay healthy. So, if that chicken meal doesn’t provide enough of those amino acids, and the grain proteins aren’t providing those amino acids at all (certain ones, I mean)…then your dog will be severely lacking in something that they most definitely need to thrive and be healthy. Lastly, I make a huge attempt at avoiding foods that use these really crappy, cheap, poorly regulated, probably China-made pre-mix of vitamins and minerals. I prefer seeing foods that get those vitamins and minerals from actual foods, actual ingredients…. I don’t want to see a laundry list of chemical-looking names, or hard to pronounce or understand ingredients. Plus, pet food manufacturers don’t see these vitamins and minerals as “ingredients”, so when they say their food is “all natural” or that their ingredients are sourced from the USA or whatever ONLY….They don’t mean the vitamin and mineral pre-mixes that you see at the end of the ingredient list….because they’re not actually ‘ingredients’.
The protein percentage is not nearly high enough for what dogs should be getting. Ideally, I would say you want to see at least 30% and up, but I try to keep my dog’s protein % around 35% – 38%. Instead of having such a high carb %, I would like to see a higher percentage of fat. Dogs use fat for energy, for various bodily processes, etc… They use fat in a much more necessary way than we do, and I feel that that’s one area where pet food manufacturers profit off of our mentality that our pet’s are basically the same as the human members of our families, or profit off us anthropomorphising our pets so much. We think that because we need to cut down on fats to lose weight, or to eat healthier, that our pets do too, and that is absolutely NOT the case at all. If you want your pet to be healthier, cut down on the carbs, because carbs are far less useable to a dog than protein and fat are.
Lastly….the ratio of Omega-6 and Omega-3 is a little high for me. I didn’t do the math on the percentages up there for those, but they look pretty steep. Ideally, you want to see a ratio of 1:2 (Omega-6 to Omega-3), but no higher than 1:4, because it’s the Omega-3 that is the most beneficial, whereas having higher levels of Omega-6 and not enough of the Omega-3 can actually backfire and cause inflammation (as opposed to being anti-inflammatory, as the omegas are often claimed to be) and cause other various issues that normally the Omega-3 would be helping to combat.
I hope that helps… It’s not all of what I think about the food, based on an initial look at the food and their website… but hopefully it’s enough to give you somewhere to start. 🙂 I feed my dog and two cats Orijen, and I’ve never been happier with what they eat. My dog finally doesn’t have any digestive issues, after battling them for 5+ years, and she actually loves and eats the Orijen, whereas before….she would stick her nose to the air at literally every other brand of food she’s ever been on. The ingredient list is ideal, their sourcing is amazing for those ingredients, and no pre-mixes of the vitamins and minerals – they all come from actual, whole foods and healthy sources. 🙂 It’s an awesome product… AND, your dog doesn’t have to eat nearly the amount of food when on Orijen, as they would of any other food. Lol. So, despite the sticker shock on the price, you see a huge difference in how long a bag of Orijen lasts you in comparison to other brands. Lol.
Hope that helps ya….Sorry for the novel of a reply. Haha.

Has anyone looked into where these pet food companies are sourcing the main ingredients for their pet food? For example Blue Buffalo’s manufacturer (one of them) is in Texas, this plant sources the protein part from off-shore, this off shore food a few months ago was contaminated and made a lot of pets sick. I want to buy USA made pet food, but I also want all the ingredients sourced in the USA.
P.s. I don’t feed Blue Buffalo none of my pets do well on it.

A few months after rescuing my dog I was lucky enough to discover Evermore (listed under the human food kitchen/plant section in this article) and we couldn’t be happier! They use a sous vide method to gently cook & seal the food (before freezing it) and are committed to the highest standards in terms of sourcing and lab testing. While the product is more expensive, they do offer free shipping on subscriptions and the convenience having it delivered at the exact right frequency is a great benefit for my busy schedule! For those who aren’t sure they want to spend the extra money on their best friend, I suggest you watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sE96vd8W40
