Nutro Pet Foods make a similar claim to many other pet food brands – ‘Real Chicken’ or ‘Real Beef’ is the #1 ingredient. With Nutro, they make the claim directly on their label (as opposed to on their website).
We asked Nutro: “What does ‘real chicken’ mean?”
The same pet food label shows an image of whole blueberries and a half of an apple, however we noticed the ingredient glossary on the Nutro website lists these ingredients in powdered form.
We asked Nutro: “And images on your website and label show a half of an apple and whole blueberries. Yet your ingredient descriptions indicate you use powdered forms of these ingredients. Isn’t that misleading to consumers?“
This Nutro brand (Ultra) makes the claim they use “Non-GMO ingredients”. However they include the disclaimer:
“*Trace amounts of genetically modified material may be present due to potential cross-contact during manufacturing.“
How much is trace amounts?
We asked Nutro: “As well, your site has the disclaimer “Trace amounts of genetically modified material may be present due to potential cross-contact during manufacturing.” How much would be considered trace amounts? What would be considered the maximum trace amount?“
Even though these were simple questions, Nutro did not respond. We submitted these questions via the contact form on the Nutro website on 5/2/22 and again on 5/9/22 receiving confirmation both times our message was received. Nutro did not respond to either message.
If Nutro responds, we will share with pet owners.
Wishing you and your pet the best –

Blueberries are ingredient #25 & apples #26 AFTER “Natural flavors” #9 & Potassium chloride which is #14. I’d like to suggest that there can’t be much of any of the supposed list of other healthy ingredients like kale, pumpkin, spinach and carrots because if there was you wouldn’t need 23 added vitamins and minerals! It would be great if someone would DNA test on of these foods and see how many of these ingredients are actually in the bag. This is just a 2-3$ / # bag of chicken meal with a vit/min pack and a bunch of “natural flavors” (whatever that is). The wet dog food is $8.14/#! That’s insane. Humane grade 80/20 ground beef is currently $4/# and a vit/min pill plus fruit/vegies is less than 4$, for a large dog.

Nutro is not a good food since being bought by Mars pet foods. When nutro was family owned it was a great food now in mine and others opinions who used to work for the company it’s not a quality food that we’d feed our dogs or cats. Nutro is made in the same plant that makes the cheap brands and once you can buy a pet food in a grocery store the quality is not the same as a food that is bought only in a pet food store.
