There is a new initiative in pet food, providing “SmartLabel” technology allowing consumers to scan a bar code to learn more about the product. Will it really help pet food consumers?
What if every pet food label contained a special bar code on the label you could scan with your cell phone where you’d be taken to a page providing you with detailed information about that particular pet food? Would that help consumers make more informed choices?
It could IF the information provided is of any value (factual, not marketing).
In December, a press release was issued regarding the “SmartLabel” technology that will provide consumers “easy and instantaneous access to detailed information” about products they use and consume (human products and pet products). “SmartLabel will provide consumers at the touch of a finger all the information they want to know about what they are purchasing.”
All the information consumers want to know? Really?
The only specified information stated in the press release of what “SmartLabel” might disclose to consumers is GMO ingredients. But, even in this initial announcement of the program, there is waffling on whether GMO information will actually be provided. The press release states that “many companies will disclose GMO ingredients”. Note the press release stated “many companies” not all companies. The Grocery Manufacturers Association who helped develop the program wants “Congress to pass legislation setting a uniform national standard for GMO labeling”. We can safely predict that GMO information provided by the “SmartLabel” program will be limited.
Personally, I don’t have much hope for the “SmartLabel” program. It has the potential to do great things, IF the program listens to consumers. If. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
If anyone notices the “SmartLabel” code on a pet food/treat product – please let us all know what information is provided.
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,
