Did it just happened that Salmonella kibble recalls dropped to zero AFTER the FDA met with Mars, Purina and Pet Food Institute?
In January of 2014, the top brass at FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine hosted a meeting with Mars, Purina, and their trade association Pet Food Institute. From Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) documents recently received about the meeting, the discussion topic was Salmonella in pet food.
In the two years preceding this meeting with FDA, Members of the Pet Food Institute had experienced a couple of recall filled years for Salmonella in kibble/dry pet foods with 14 different recalls. By comparison, the raw pet food category experienced two recalls in the same two year time frame.
But after this meeting, recalls just happened to make a dramatic change. Kibble recalls dropped to just 3 in the same year (2014), 1 in 2015, and zero in every year since. And…it just happened that raw pet food recalls soared after that meeting.
Did this dramatic shift in recalls just happen?
Or is the FDA practicing even more ‘enforcement discretion’ to help their Big Pet Feed friends?
