My Mom…Ain’t She Sweet!

My Mom is one amazing woman. She married my Dad at 17 years old, they were together for 60 years in good and bad times. When my Dad died three years ago, my Mom found herself alone for the first time in her life. A year and a half later, she reluctantly moved to Florida. But what she’s done since is nothing short of amazing.

What a treat! Glad you shared – those of us who have lost our moms wish every day to be able to share them with others. Cherish and enjoy every day with her.

Susan, what a wonderful clip; I watched it twice! Your Mom is wonderful, and it’s easy to see why you are TOO! With a Mom like her, how could you have turned out otherwise!

Congratulations to your Mom and to YOU for all you do on behalf of us and our beloved pets.

    Cyber-hugs to you both,

My mom went dancing every Friday until she was 93. Loved it and it kept her young. I taught her to play pool at 80 and she did that too and was quite good 🙂
These things keep you young at heart and that effects your health.
Your mom is lovely and has that sparkle in her eye.

Loved this. So inspiring. All of the dancers, but esp your Mom, who looks decades younger than she really is. Thanks for putting a smile on my face on an otherwise sad day.

Susan, I enjoyed watching your Mom who does not look a day over 50. It brought back memories of my mom and dad who enjoyed dancing whenever they could in their living room to the big bands records they
kept. They were young at heart. Thank you for sharing and I would
agree you have taken charge of life and giving it your all. Much of our lives should be giving back and you are with all the advocacy work you do to enlighten and teach us about our companion animals. Thanks for sharing something special of yours.

Thank you so much, Susan, for sharing this beautiful video of your mom…..OMG she looks so YOUNG! I bet all the guys are after her! And she is obviously a very beautiful spirit, a trait she has obviously passed down to you!

Thanks again for sharing this….she is a gift to you and to everyone else.

What a wonderful tribute to your gorgeous Mom.
I lost both of my parents in their 80’s so it is very inspiring to see these fit and happy seniors enjoying their golden years. My father in law will turn 102 in March and still lives in his home alone with a little help from us. He is an inspiration to us each day.
He now uses a walker, but he would be very impressed with the nearly 102 year old dancer in your video. While our Dad can no longer dance, he continues with his beautiful glass art work that he still makes, shows, and sells.
    Thanks for sharing with us.

Susan – thank you for sharing this wonderful video of your Mom. She was an amazingly beautiful young woman and she’s an amazing woman in her older years. I congratulate her for gathering her courage, after losing your Dad, and forging forward to a new life in FL. That takes a lot of guts at a time when it would be easier to just stay inside and assume your social life was over. It just goes to show that one can learn anything new at any point in life if one just puts their mind to it. You are a very lucky woman to have a Mother like her to model.

    • Susan Thixton

      November 30, 2013 at 1:24 pm

It did take a lot of guts for her to move on with her life – she lived in one city her whole life and never lived alone. She moved, learned to get around, made new friends, and did all of this on her own. Really proud of her – she ‘raised the bar’ for the women in our family!

Thank you SO much for sharing this, Susan! My worst fear is losing my husband of 51 yrs.! We are both in good shape, but we never know what’s around the next corner! I’ve never lived alone either, and this story and video are so very inspiring to me!
I’m staying in shape to do the things I love, namely helping people work with their dogs so they have a loving companion instead of constant frustrations. I think everyone should follow their passions in life! Also… I thank you for YOUR wonderful contribution to those of us that want to keep on learning how to be the best caretakers for our doggies!

    Hi Susan,

Your Mom is amazing – Tell her I think she looks half her age, and if dancing did that for her I am going out dancing today with my little Shih Tzu, Macy. Tell her to keep it up. Many thanks to you for all that you do for our beloved pets.

    Susan,

Thanks for sharing! Your mom is terrific!

I just lost my dad earlier this year (10 weeks after losing my beloved animal companion of almost 17 years, Dakota) and he and my mom were big ballroom dancers. I’m going to share this clip with her. I hope it will encourage her to “keep dancing!”

    Thanks for sharing!

The whole thing made me smile, Susan. God bless your Mom! She looks amazing, and it appears, she is living and loving life still! My parents were married were married at 17 & 19, also for 60 years. My Dad was afraid to fly. So my Mom always told me if he died before her, she would fly to see me. I seriously never believed her. But he died in Oct. of 1990, and she came to Dallas four, YES four, times the first 12 months! And she flew on an airplane every time. Mom’s ROCK at any age!!

Very heartwarming. How awesome that they are able to have these dances every week. My dad is only able to go once a month. That is incredibly brave of your mom to pick up and move & start all over again at her age–well really at any age. Truly an inspiration…

Your Mom is amazing to be sure! Our mother’s both lost their husbands 3 years ago. My Mom is in a Memory Care Retirement Center, but is very anti-social. I wish she were more like your Mom. She’d be so much happier. Your Mom has inspired me. I am 60 and when my time comes, I hope to be as courageous as she is. I too love dancing. It keeps you young and active. Thanks for sharing! It made my day!

Thank you, Susan. I hope my daughter (56yrs) sees this and contacts me. She hasn’t spoken to me for many years or even let me know where they live. Don’t even know why. My faith promises me that she will wake up and become that sweet daughter she was and as you are, Susan. God bless you

I saw this post among the 54+ (and counting) other well-wishes for Susan’s Mom. And it struck me as being very sad for you. So many here wish their Mom (and in some cases, their daughters) were still with them! While others in this world take so much for granted. My parents are gone. I try to befriend those who would be my parents’ ages, and help when I can. Knowing that if I weren’t around, I would want the same for them. Taking them shopping, phone calls, help with chores. But mostly so they know they aren’t alone. I hope there are others around you (friends, neighbors, church goers) who see the beautiful spirit inside you. To let you know you’re not alone either. Don’t forget, it’s your daughter’s loss at this point. Because you seem poised and willing to welcome her back, no matter what the past. I will keep you both in my prayers! And do post if ever their is a reconcilliation. Take care for the Holidays. People DO care!!

I love it Susan!! When my Mom passed away my Dad sold his house and moved to a Senior High Rise thinking his life was over. He met a lovely lady there across the hall and he was smitten with her. pretty soon they were doing everything together and busy running across the hall to each others apartments!! He told us he wanted to marry Edna!! unfortunately Dad only got to spend 2 years with Edna as he passed away suddenly from a massive stroke or massive Heart Attack at age 89. Edna was so severly depressed after losing him, she died shortly after him. 🙁 My Mom and Dad were married close to 51 years. Sometimes when you think your life is over, it isn’t!!!

Your mom is great. My mom was the same way. Through her 70’s and 80’s she went to dances several times a week. She is now 97 yrs old and lives with me in California. Her 98 yr old brother has flown out to see her twice in the last year from Michigan. What is the key to this healthy longevity??

(Party) Hats off to your Mom, and it did not escape me that she has several different dance partners! I bet her dance card is full. Her grace and charm are evident, and I’m sure she brings smiles off the dance floor as well. Oh, I LOVED this. I am so happy to see your mom enjoying herself. My mom and dad lived in FL in their later years and belonged to a club there. I went to many New Years dances there and they were all so much fun. The seniors really know how to get out and boogie! My mom and dad used to go out every Fri. and Sat. night when younger and continued in FL. They are both gone now and I miss them very much. Your mom and mine were such an inspiration. I know I will be keeping on if I am lucky enough to make it to that age. God Bless her and you!
