Cesar® Softies Dog Treats have won “Pet Food of the Year for 2010”. After looking at the ingredients, would you purchase this Product of the Year Award winner?
Cesar® Softies Dog Treats, as announced in the Mars Petcare press release, has won the Pet Food Category Winner for 2010 as Product of the Year USA. Confusing; this dog treat is not a food. Ed Uebele, marketing director for Cesar® Treats states “Being recognized as the top pet food product after having been on the market for a few of months is truly a tribute to our commitment to providing small dogs with the very best in quality dog treats.”
“Very best in quality dog treats”…would you purchase this treat?
Here are the ingredients for the Cesar® Softies Dog Treats, Filet Mignon Flavor…
Rice Flour, Wheat Flour, Sugar, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Animal Fat (preserved with BHA/BHT), Caramel Color, Natural Poultry Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Natural Filet Mignon Flavor, Calcium Propionate (a preservative), Potassium Sorbate (a preservative), Hickory Flavor, Artificial Color, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Titanium Dioxide.
No meat, no health promoting ingredients. However, these treats do contain the ingredient ‘animal fat’; one of the ingredients determined by the FDA to be probable to contain pentobarbital and thus probable to contain a euthanized animal. The ‘animal fat’ ingredient is as well preserved with BHA/BHT, a chemical preservative linked to cancer.
Managing Directory for Product of the Year, Colleen Kelly, states “The Product of the Year seal is a true vote of confidence for today’s consumer.” The press release states “Cesar® Treats offer small dogs a tasty and satisfying snack, while also allowing small dog owners to accessorize with packaging that resembles a stylish purse.” http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/cesarr-treats-honored-as-pet-food-of-the-year-for-2010-83665872.html
Results of the Product of the Year USA awards were based on a survey of 60, 329 people.
So…would you purchase these award winning Cesar® Treats for your dog? Does the ‘stylish purse’ packaging influence you?
As for my own dogs, they will NOT be snacking on these treats. They are only provided treats that contain health promoting ingredients; no animal fat, no by-products and no chemical preservatives.
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,

My 2 year old Pekingese vomits every time after eating one or two of these chicken-flavored treats. It took me a few days to realize it was the treats. So I did a test. And yes, 5 – 10 minutes after eating Cesar chicken treats he goes and vomits. He no longer gets any Cesar products.
