Thousands of livestock animals drown in the November 2021 flooding in British Columbia Canada. Alerted by a concerned pet owner, we have learned that at least 250,000 pounds of drown (decomposing) hog carcasses were rendered into pet food/animal feed ingredients by West Coast Rendering Vancouver (see video at 1:13 https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/1996753475652/).
Below is a Google Earth image of the West Coast Rendering plant in Vancouver – with their (assumed) company motto on a storage bin enlarged.
- Pet owners in Canada will NOT be informed if their pet’s food contains ingredients sourced from these drowned, decomposing animal carcasses.
- Pet owners won’t be told if these pet food/animal feed ingredients sourced from drowned, decomposing animal carcasses will be used in Canadian manufactured pet foods or if the ingredients will be shipped to the US to be used in US manufactured pet foods.
Why is “Nothing Left Behind” but nothing is disclosed to pet owners? All pet owners – anywhere in the world – deserve to know if their pet’s food contains ingredients sourced from rendered decomposing animal carcasses or diseased animal carcasses.
Thousands of more pounds of drown livestock will be composted for soil additives according to a news story in the CBC.
The question is – why isn’t all material from decomposing animal carcasses composted INSTEAD of secretly disposed of in pet food/animal feed?
Wishing you and your pet the best –

This is exactly the reason I will only buy whole meats to put in our food. I won’t buy preground, because I don’t know what is in the ground. I want to know what went into our food. If I can’t say it or wouldn’t eat it won’t go in our products.

Thank you Susan for revealing possible bad ingredients in Canadian pet food. There is no government oversight of pet food manufacturing in Canada.

I only purchase organic meats locally farm direct (it was difficult to find organic organ meats which is a necessary part of a home-prepared canine diet). For those who cannot manage for whatever reason to do home prep, it’s super important to go to the dog food website and look at which company “owns” the label, the brand. Then go to THAT website and try to discern where there supplies come from. There are some big players in the commercial pet food business and those big players supply most of the “labels.” If at all possible do home prep with locally sourced organic ingredients. Where not possible then try to purchase a brand that has human grade ingredients and a brand which is transparent about their sourcing, packaging and preparation. Actually this “drilling down for info” is even very important in contemplating dog toy purchases – because many are made in China and the dyes China uses in many dog toys is lead-based and that lead-base of the dyes you won’t see on any label. Best to just avoid any dog toys made in China.
