I wonder how did this happen if the list says every batch is tested for pathogens.

Or you can cook it. https://www.cdc.gov/bird-flu/prevention/index.html For poultry:
Cooking poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165˚F kills bacteria and viruses, including avian influenza A viruses. People should separate uncooked (raw) poultry from cooked foods and foods that won’t be cooked. Cook all poultry and poultry products (including eggs) all the way before eating.

The high pressure processing employed by Northwest Naturals did not inactivate highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus, I guess? That is concerning.

We appreciate all the work you do, Susan. We have followed you for years.
I understand this statement & recall is what the company has put out. The cat did more than fall ill and has died. I am so saddened to hear the news & our hearts go out to the family. I have read the below quote.
“We are confident that this cat contracted H5N1 by eating the Northwest Naturals raw and frozen pet food,” said ODA State Veterinarian Dr. Ryan Scholz. “This cat was strictly an indoor cat; it was not exposed to the virus in its environment, and results from the genome sequencing confirmed that the virus recovered from the raw pet food and infected cat were exact matches to each other.”
I understand traditional vets & FDA are ready to point fingers at raw foods. I have changed my mind about raw and or freezed dried raw feeding today. The risk is too high for cats. The one assurance I had was choosing the right company and human-grade ingredients in a human-grade facility, but now that assurance is gone.
I would love to see further insight & testing on this avian flu and what the companies are doing to prevent this from happening in the future.
This is a nightmare for our cats & humans choosing the species-appropriate diet! I personally have selected a few cooked diet for my cat from your 2025 list to try.
I’m interested to see if you will continue to feed your cats a raw diet?
Thank you for all you do for our furmily.

How did this happen.. Doesn’t Northwest Naturals use human grade source and USDA inspected plant?? Or they are lying.
