Pet Food Survey Gives Us Hopeful News

The pet food industry IS changing (whether the feed industry likes it or not).

According to a new survey published by PetFoodIndustry.com, 17% of pet owners give their pet a fresh food, 9% give their pet a raw food.

Kibble was the most commonly fed style of pet food of those surveyed – at 81%, can was fed to pets by 50% of pet owners surveyed.

BUT…

The survey asked pet owners which style of pet food “they would buy if cost and availability were not a factorand the numbers changed dramatically.

If cost was not a factor…

36% of pet owners would feed kibble,
21% of pet owners would feed can
.

These amazing statistics are evidence that more and more pet owners are learning that feed is not food. And…if pet ‘food’ products were a little more affordable, most pet owners would leave feed on the store shelves.

Currently, human foods are much more affordable than pet foods. As example, this almost 12 ounce TV dinner is only $1.49 from Target.

Almost 12 ounces of human grade meat, vegetables and fruit for $1.49. The cost for 12 ounces of human grade meat, vegetables and fruit in a pet food would currently be dramatically more.

The obstacle in our way to more affordable human grade pet food is manufacturing. Human food manufacturing facilities are still extremely hesitant to manufacture a pet food. Most human food manufacturers have yet to grasp that a pet ‘food’ is no different than human food – its just formulated a little differently. Most human food manufacturers are stuck in the dark ages of feed, that pet ‘food’ is something lesser in quality than people food and they want nothing to do with it.

But…as the need increases (as shown by the PetFoodIndustry.com survey), the antiquated attitudes of human food manufacturers will change. Maybe sooner than we think.

Imagine if you could purchase frozen human grade meals for your dog or cat at every grocery. Imagine if the pet food meals were budget friendly – such as Banquet for cats and dogs. The $1.49 cost for twelve ounces of human food could be significantly less for a pet food when ingredients are combined (instead of four individually prepared food servings in one container).

What if more and more human food manufacturers started to produce human grade pet food meals for $1.00 a day to feed a 30 pound dog or $1.00 for two days to feed a cat? How many feed grade products would be left on store shelves then?

The change is happening. And all of us (pet owners) are forcing that change. We’ve waited a long time for it, but it’s finally beginning to happen.

Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,

Hi All, I have been making pet food since 2005. The only ingredients we use are real meat, real vegetables, EVOO and kelp. I would love to sell 12 ounces of food for $1.49. Unfortunately, my price for ingredients is 4 times that price. I had a new customer ask me to compare the price of SD to our food. I told them a couldn’t do that because price is only an issue when everything else is the same.

My dog passed away 3 weeks ago. She was in great health, except for a collapsing thrachea. When I took her to the vet, he said she’s awfully young for this, usually happens between 12-14 years old. I asked how old he thinks she was. He responded 8 or 10. I told him to add those two together, she was 18!! She had a great life, mainly because of the food she ate. We want pets to thrive, not just survive. If you’re manufacturing pet food for profit, all you care about is the bottom line.

You get what you pay for!

Sounds like a great idea until you look at the ingredients! This is the human version of commercial dog food. I wouldn’t eat this unless I was starving and I wouldn’t feed it to my dog or any other animal either. Just reading it makes my gag.
    “Ingredients:
gravy (water, modified food starch, flavorings, monosodium glutamate, salt, hydrolyzed soy protein with hydrogenated soybean oil, corn syrup solids, caramel color, dried whey), water, salisbury steak patty (beef, pork, water, dehydrated onion, textured soy flour, bread crumbs {bleached wheat flour [enriched with niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid}, durum flour, leavening {sodium bicarbonate, sodium acid pyrophosphate}, yeast], soy protein concentrate, salt, caramel color, sodium tripolyphosphate, flavoring), corn, dehydrated potatoes (potatoes, mono- and diglycerides from vegetable oil, disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bisulfite, citric acid, bht), soybean oil, salt, whey protein concentrate, sugar.”
PS. The front of the box says “steak (made with chicken, pork, beef)” Where’s the chicken?

I get Ziwi and Caru from Chewy. I bought Ziwi air dried as a treat but my very spoiled Peanut howls until he gets some. I give them Ziwi lamb and mackerel and Ziwi lamb for more than $3.00 /6oz can . I buy the rabbit sometimes but ITS OVER 5.00 A 6 OZ CAN. I’m mixing Caru with Weruba to wean Oscar off of Weruva since I learned the supplements are from China and it contains a copper compound that’s bad for the liver (its 2.00 /6 oz can). 3 of my cats cooperate and eat what’s good for them but peanut will starve if I dont put the dry Ziwi on top of the wet food. I even powder it in my separate cat, food processor. When I bought 4 pounds of organic ground turkey (people food), I ended up throwing it all away. These guys are a real challenge.
