Guess what one pet owner found in a can of Pedigree Dog food? A frog. Pictures provided by the concerned pet owner.
I have to admit, it was one of the most unusual emails that I’ve received. Diane T. of Frankfort, IL contacted me with the following information…
“This is gross I have pictures but here goes. I found a dead frog in a can of pedigree choice cut dog food yesterday. I have pictures no satisfaction from Mars. How sad. This is the e mail I sent to them. Per your request Attached are the pictures of the dead frog I found in the can of dog food. As I explained to your representative on the phone,. This is absolutely disgusting. Not only do I raise show dogs and have come to depend on your products and have found it to be a health risk to my pets. After the major health scare in dog food a few years ago I would think your quality control would be the best in the industry. If my dogs would have ingested this who knows what could have occurred. What type of frog is this? Does it contain Toxins that could kill a pet.
Why did this happen. I would like some answers. I spoke with my vet he said it may cause diarrhea, vomiting or neurological problems. The only results I got from your company is free coupons. Are you going to pay for my vet bills if my dogs get sick.”
Within a few minutes Diane T. and I were on the phone; and she had sent me the pictures.
Diane T. told me Mars Petcare wanted to pick up the frog and pet food via Federal Express. She was concerned whether to do that; her worry is if this frog contaminated an entire batch of pet food. Would pets get sick?
I advised Diane T. to report this issue to the Illinois Department of Agriculture and to the FDA. Hopefully someone at either of these government organizations will do the right thing.
