FDA Investigation Found NO Avian Flu in Northwest Naturals Pet Food

Northwest Naturals recall has been “terminated”.

Northwest Naturals Pet Food issued a statement today (2/17/25). The pet food company shared the FDA and Oregon Department of Agriculture performed an audit/inspection of their manufacturing facility (a licensed USDA inspected human food facility) from late December 2024 through February 7, 2025. And…

The FDA’s audit did not contain any findings related to H5N1 or Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), and the FDA did not identify the source of the alleged contamination found in the opened bag of our product. Additionally, our product was never included in the FDA’s list of Recalls & Withdrawals, which can be found at https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/safety-health/recalls-withdrawals. Upon the completion of FDA’s audit, we updated the status of our voluntary recall with ODA to ‘closed’ and the recall has since been terminated.

This means, that for six weeks regulatory authorities searched and tested and searched and tested…but they found NO contamination of Northwest Naturals pet food with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

This means that even though Oregon Department of Agriculture stated “We are confident that this cat contracted H5N1 by eating the Northwest Naturals raw and frozen pet food” in a press release – it turns out…they were wrong.

Northwest Naturals are going to get a very contrite and sincere apology from the Oregon Dept of Agriculture, along with compensation for damage to their reputation, right? 😁

They should – and in a press release too! But I’m not holding my breath.

How about a hefty financial award, as they have surely had untold expense dealing with this falsehood! Time to lawyer up, NWN!

Unfortunately people may not realize that cats that roam freely outdoors are catching the Avian flu by having contact with birds and rodents. Disgusting to assume and blame the food from an ethical manufacturer when the solution to the problem is to keep your cat indoors.

I’m confused. What are they even saying then?!?

Time to write the head of OR Dept Ag again and ask how they are going to prevent this kind of “mistake” from happening again in the future! Letting them know the public cares is critical in getting action.

I agree. A general email address for Oregon Department of Ag is: info@oda.oregon.gov

I really hope Northwest-Naturals Pet Food will be taking legal action against the Oregon Department of Agriculture. To make a statement like they did without any solid proof what-so-ever and cause damage to the reputation of the company has to have legal ramifications.

It’s amazing how we only cull the flocks of chickens that provide eggs and meat. Any sick seagulls, eagles and robins are free to live and gain natural immunity through exposure to the virus. Makes you think the government has a different end goal…but then why be suspicious after the last 5 years?

It has to be a conspiracy theory! It’s not like most people eat the eggs and meat from those chicken so we don’t want them to all get infected food.

Why aren’t we killing the sick wild birds(Seagulls, eagles and robins). Because it’s impossible to capture every wild bird and test to see if they are sick. Besides like you said they will gain immunity naturally and like I said most people aren’t eating wild birds.

The goal is to completely eradicate the raw petfood industry. Three guesses who funds the eradication efforts and the first two guesses don’t count: it would be the same megacorporations that for years have waged a campaign (in legislation and t he media) against organic livestock feed.
