Confused about categories and styles of pet food?

We hope this new white paper will help.

Selecting a pet food can be overwhelming. All too often, decisions are made based on advertising which can be extremely misleading. Even many veterinarians – when making pet food recommendations to their clients – are taken in by the marketing.

To make the decision process a little less overwhelming, Association for Truth in Pet Food and TruthaboutPetFood.com provides pet owners with a new resource: “The categories, styles, legal requirements and recall data of commercial pet food in the United States.”

In this paper we have compiled legal definitions of styles of pet food, such as the legal definition of kibble and can pet foods. The paper also includes common concerns of each style of pet food and provides questions to ask manufacturers (to help pet owners avoid the concerns).

The paper also provides information on what is and is not regulated for each style of pet food, along with documented risks of each style.

Our goal in publishing this document is better informed pet owners. Please feel free to share the paper with others.

Note: the paper will also be available on any post on this website, in the sidebar under Learn More – The Many Styles of Pet Food.

Wishing you and your pet the best –

What an awesome reference! Thank you Susan!! There was stuff in there even I didn’t know, like therapeutic diets aren’t required to be complete and balanced! They expect vets with minimal nutrition education to balance these diets over time? ROFL! Another reason to save your money and feed an ailing pet real food. A google search for “home made” dog food for (insert disease) will provide answers. Take that recipe to your vet and ask them if it will do the same thing as the prescription diet. Most won’t know but will suggest trying it and then testing again, which is what you’d do with a prescription diet as well to see if it’s working.
