At Last…We Have a Meeting With FDA

If you would like to participate, please read.

Pet owners are the largest stakeholder in pet food. While FDA has held meetings with other stakeholders in pet food for years (decades), the agency has denied us (our stakeholder organization AssociationforTruthinPetFood.com) the same opportunity. Until now.

Yesterday (8/25/22) the FDA notified us that they are willing to provide us with a “Stakeholder meeting” this fall. The tentative date they suggested and we agreed to is September 23. Our plan is for this meeting to begin a regular meeting schedule (quarterly) with FDA.

This meeting (and future meetings) will be to bring to FDA’s attention pet food issues that pet owners struggle with – directly from pet owners. Thus, at each meeting 2 or 3 pet owners, an independent pet store owner, and perhaps a veterinarian will participate.

So…for this first meeting…

If you would like to participate in the meeting – please let me know. Since there are so many of ‘us’ that would like to participate – and we can only have 2 or 3 at each meeting – here is how we will initially narrow it down:

  • You have a particular pet food issue you would like to share with FDA. This can be anything – from your experience of a sick pet, a pet death, labeling – anything you believe is/was related to a pet food or a pet treat. Or if you have a specific question about pet food you’d like FDA to explain their position on.
  • You agree to be polite and respectful in expressing your pet food issue with FDA. (Believe me, I understand this can be difficult. But, we want to continue a dialogue between FDA and pet owners. We must be respectful at each meeting.)
  • You need to be available on September 23, 2022 during business hours (Eastern Time). However, that date could change – flexibility might be necessary.
  • The meeting will be virtual. You will need to have a strong internet connection to connect to the meeting. And have a basic understanding of how to connect to/participate in virtual meetings.

If the meeting can be recorded (I will ask), the video will be shared with all pet owners. If not, details of each meeting will be shared here on TruthaboutPetFood.com.

If you would like to participate, please use the contact form explaining the issue/question you would like to share with FDA.

Wishing you and your pet the best –

I use your annual list for my dogs & Open Farm is one I buy. They just came out this week w/ a Vegan formula & an Insect based formula – I want to keep an open mind but will not be buying this for my furbabies, I get fish as they are lower on the food chain. I am concerned that things like cricket flour (which is being found in human foods) may be in other formulas under names we cant recognize. Thank you for an input.

That is such wonderful news Susan, I am so excited for you and all pet owners that our voices will finally be listened to. Looking forward to hearing more about this and updates as you go along. Thank you so much for not giving up on your fight for all our sweet fur babies and their moms and dads. I just lost my sweet Romeeoh July 30th and not doing a very good job getting through this grief cycle. Your news about the FDA meetings brought some happiness to me today. Thank you again for all that you do.

After all these years (decades?) of the FDA barely recognizing that you exist, I hope they will be fair and allow a great deal of time to be spent at this meeting.
Congratulations and thank you for your never ending persistence!

The fact that these corporate cat food producers have recently begun pushing all these ‘entres’ with starches, macaroni, sweet potato, rice etc. seems to be undermining cats’ health- there should be a warning on the labels that it may lead to feline diabetes…same for these super high carbohydrate recipes like Purina Fancy Feast’s ‘, & florentine dishes. If these labels included the carb count ( in wet terms specifically), to give the pet owner a fighting chance to protect their cats from this health risk. Thanks for your efforts.
