Pet Food Regulations

AAFCO Meeting Starts Tuesday January 21, 2025

Topics for this meeting include cell cultured meat and consumer relations.

With AAFCO’s future still in question, the next meeting for the organization will begin next week, held in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Pet owners can attend the meeting in person or virtually, for a fee of $250.00. This meeting is the first time AAFCO has offered a discounted fee for consumers; industry pays $575.00 for attendance. The first session of interest for pet owners will be AAFCO adding a “subcommittee” for “Consumer Relations“. This discussion will take place during the Current Issues and Outreach Committee session, Tuesday January 21, 2025, 11:05-11:45 am (CT).

The next session of interest is the Ingredient Definitions Committee, January 2025
January 21st, 2:15 pm CT. Ingredient definitions being discussed include Rawhide, the term Sprouted, Fish, Pomegranate Pomace, and defining the terms ‘as fed’, ‘as is’ and ‘dry matter’.

The Ingredient Definitions Committee discussions will end at 4:15 CT allowing time for a presentation regarding “Cell Cultured Meat- Processes for Regulation and Production“. The presenters are not representing a cell cultured meat manufacturer, instead the presenters are representing a law firm that “guides clients through a
comprehensive array of food and drug regulatory matters
“.

And the last session of interest for pet food consumers is the Pet Food Committee, Wednesday January 22, 2025 Time: 1:15 – 2:45 CT. The FDA will give a “final report” from their working group on pet food Nutrient Profiles.

If your pet has become sick or has died you believe is linked to a pet food, it is important to report the issue to FDA and your State Department of Agriculture.

Save all pet food – do not return it for a refund.
