The next AAFCO meeting begins tomorrow, pet owners can listen in.
The AAFCO Pet Food Committee meeting will be held Tuesday January 19, 2021, from 2:30–4:00 pm EST. The meeting only has three discussion topics scheduled; human grade (pet food) guidelines update, an update about the modernization of pet food labels, and a discussion of Fatty Acids and Arachidonic acid – “Are they essential or not essential per AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles?”
We will be paying close attention to the human grade pet food guidelines update, as some in pet food have previously attempted to lessen the standards in previous years. To lessen the standards from what FDA originally established could be detrimental to human grade pet foods.
The pet food label modernization is something AAFCO has been working on for at least five years – with no end in sight. We don’t expect much from this update.
For every previous AAFCO meeting, the organization provided telephone access for pet owners to listen into meetings for no charge. This year they are still providing listen in free access, but only through a webinar listen in mode. Pet owners can go to this website: https://aafco-mym21.performedia.com/ and click on Listen Now at the scheduled time to hear the meeting. Those that opt for free attendance will not be allowed to provide comment on discussions. Only those that pay $350.00 to attend can comment. We have paid our admission fee and will be providing comment when necessary.
The Ingredient Definitions Committee meeting will be held Wednesday January 20, 2021, from 2:45 – 5:00 PM EST. The second item on the agenda is of concern; “Modification of Human Grade Feed Term“. It is unknown what is behind this, but we definitely plan to voice an objection should AAFCO try to significantly change the definition. The definitions of Poultry and Poultry Meal are also scheduled to be edited, we are not provided with what edits they are considering.
The same opportunity to listen only as above is available for this meeting session.
As soon as we can, we’ll provide pet owners with an update to what was actually discussed.
Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,
