Report It!

If your pet got sick from a pet food or treat…

Report the illness to…

  • Your Veterinarian (seek treatment first!)
  • State Department of Agriculture (ask for pet food investigator) with the exception of the following states…
California – State authority for pet food is Department of Public Health; report pet food/treat adverse event to CA Department of Public Health.Hawaii – State authority for pet food is Department of Public Health; report pet food/treat adverse event to Department of Health.Nevada – no state authority over pet food; FDA is the only place to report.
  • Pet Food Manufacturer

Save…

  • The pet food and packaging (investigators need pet food for testing and lot numbers for identification).  It is VERY important to save both pet food and packaging.  Double bag and freeze pet food if you prefer (necessary for open cans).  Investigators will need the proper pet food identification too…

  • Gather your pet’s veterinary treatment records for FDA follow up; actual laboratory findings and patient logs.

All suspect pet food/treat adverse events (illness or death) should be reported
to proper authorities.
