Raw Basics pet food recalls 540 pounds of pork-bison pet food.

The following press release was provided by Raw Basics:

Raw Basics, LLC. of Pleasant Prairie, WI is recalling 540lb of 5lb Pork-Bison Boxes because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.
Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

This recall is being issued after our firm was notified by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture of the positive Salmonella finding. Product affected was isolated to 1 lot of 540 lbs (108 boxes) and distributed to distributors in Minnesota, Georgia, Kansas, and Pennsylvania. These products were sold at pet specialty retail stores. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Product is packaged in 5lb Frozen Boxes labeled Tucker’s Pork-Bison-Formula.

Raw Basics tests all batches of products for all pathogens in a hold and release program before releasing for shipping.

Consumers who have purchased Tucker’s 5lb Pork-Bison Boxes are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-219-3650.

What is going on with raw food? If this product is tested bf going out, how can the Dept of Agriculture test positive? Perhaps the Dept of Agriculture does not keep the raw food in a sterile environment under correct temperature.

it seems as of late that many raw feeds are being recalled. I wonder if it is an attempt from the pet food giants to prove how risky raw is? hoping more pet owners feed their crap! So glad I make my own pet FOOD. And sad so many owners are fooled by ads.

AND this makes #8 in 12 days of raw pet food recall! If all these recalls don’t scare consumers away then it could be a good reason it won’t All you can do is slightly cook it 1-2 minutes and I believe it will destroy all bacteria it may have at least they notify us consumers asap and guarantee a full refund

I agree that all these recent recalls on raw food are suspect. The company had already tested the batches so how is the department of agriculture finding bacteria?
No pets have been sick, no humans have been sick, so that should be a big indicator that there is actually a problem with the Dept of Agricultural’s testing procedures or they’re using something already contaminated.i believe there would have been at least one reported illness & to date I’ve only found one death resulting from raw food contamination & it was overseas in a kitten. Compared to numerous deaths due to recalled kibble & canned? Think I’ll stick with raw.
