Purina One Beyond What do You Think?

Have you seen the new television commercial for Purina’s new dog food Purina One Beyond? Here’s the YouTube version of the commercial, Purina promotional videos, and the ingredients of the dog food, what do you think?

Have you seen the new television commercial for Purina’s new dog food Purina One Beyond?  Here’s the YouTube version of the commercial, Purina promotional videos, and the ingredients of the dog food, what do you think?

The new Purina dog food commercial is something unlike any other pet food commercial; it’s almost inspirational.  That is if you don’t know much about pet food.  Inspiring words like ‘We Believe in Nature‘ and ‘thoughtful choice‘ are shown over top of lovely scenes from nature, interspersed with images of happy/healthy dogs and cats.  Music played in the background is typical of those ‘feel good‘ miracle-about-to-happen movies you’ve seen on Lifetime or Oprah specials.  Mention of shelter pets isn’t forgotten either – ‘We believe shelter pets deserve better‘ is thrown in and to top it all off this Purina Pet Food commercial makes the inspirational statement ‘We believe we can make the world a better place one pet at a time‘.  I have to say this Purina Pet Food commercial doesn’t miss a trick; it is very well made/produced.

Here’s the video…

And then when you visit the Purina One Beyond website you’ll find four more video’s…

You have to admit, these are very well produced videos.  And kudos to Purina for producing an almost 100% degradable package and utilizing solar energy to produce their pet food.  But, being picky as I am about what my pets eat, let’s take a look at the ingredients in Purina One Beyond (despite Purina telling us their product is ‘more than its ingredients’).

“Purina One Beyond Salmon & Whole Brown Rice Recipe Cat Food
Accented with cranberries, tomatoes & spinach”

Ingredients:  “Salmon, chicken meal, whole brown rice, soybean meal, whole barley, whole oat meal, animal fat preserved with mixed tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), soy protein isolate, brewers dried yeast, dried egg product, dried beet pulp, natural flavor, fish oil, phosphoric acid, calcium carbonate, whole cranberries, caramel color, dried tomatoes, dried spinach, salt, potassium chloride, taurine, choline chloride, calcium phosphate, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, niacin, manganese sulfate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite.”

No corn or wheat just as the video said, but there are two soy ingredients.  This cat food also contains a synthetic vitamin K – menadione sodium bisulfite complex – linked to serious health issues in pets.  Purina told me “important nutritional supplements that are not commonly available in the USA or other countries” are sourced “from China“.

This cat food contains the ingredient ‘animal fat’.  The pet food ingredient animal fat was determined by FDA testing to be the most likely pet food ingredient to contain pentobarbital, thus it is the most likely pet food ingredient to contain a euthanized animal.

And for the dog food…
Purina One Beyond Chicken & Whole Oat Meal Recipe
Accented with carrots, tomatoes & apples

Ingredients:  Chicken, chicken meal, whole oat meal, whole barley, soybean meal, whole brown rice, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), dried beet pulp, dried egg product, natural flavor, fish oil, caramel color, salt, dried carrots, dried tomatoes, dried apples, calcium phosphate, potassium chloride, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, calcium carbonate, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, copper sulfate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite.

No corn or wheat just as the video said, but there are two soy ingredients.  This dog food also contains a synthetic vitamin K – menadione sodium bisulfite complex – linked to serious health issues in pets.  Purina told me “important nutritional supplements that are not commonly available in the USA or other countries” are sourced “from China“.

As for myself, I think Purina has done very good with utilizing natural energy sources and developing biodegradable packaging.   But…because of knowledge of pet food ingredients like ‘animal fat’, I would not feed this food to my own pets.  I’m a huge supporter of alternative energies (actually – my belief is that’s where all of those horrible rendered pet food ingredients should go to – biofuel) and biodegradable packaging, but I myself would not purchase any pet product that contained the ingredient animal fat or contained anything from China regardless of how eco-friendly the pet food/treat is.  So…how about you?

After seeing the commercial and the Purina videos, what do you think about the pet foods?  Would the efforts of Purina in sustainable energy and biodegradable packaging be enough to sway you to purchase this pet food?  What do you think about Purina’s efforts towards sustainable energy and biodegradable pet food packaging?  In your opinion, is Purina ‘making the world a better place one pet at a time’?

I haven’t done much research on Purina’s ‘Beyond’ catfood, other than perusing a few forums. The reviews were (overwhelmingly) positive. I realize that this is merely anecdotal. But my 3 cats love it & have yet to get tired of it, gave it to them about a year ago. I’d recommend this catfood.

I agree! My 5 cats love it, and no stomach upset. It seems impossibe to feed anything nowadays, with all the critics. Not everyone can afford very high end food, but I think this one is very good, and it’s not that cheap when you compare to other brands! How about people try to do their best, and give the animal love, and a home. If only rich people could have pets, the shelter situation would be far worse than it already is!! Kudos those of you who do the best they can for the love of animals!! ❤

I have started feeding this to my cats again. I like the fact that it has DL Methionine in it, which is great for urinary issues, and in my case, helping to prevent them. I notice they tend to drink more water, which is also good for the kidneys. After reading the article, I will probably phase it out and go back to Halo. There isn’t much difference in price. All 5 of my cats do like the chicken and the salmon Beyond.

I don’t know….I mean you could go crazy reading review after review on all different brands and formulas of any pet food. And, at some point I’m sure you’ll find that one ‘review’ that’ll make you think twice about the choice you’ve made. I’ve been feeding my 2 yr old orange tabby Beyond Chicken and Brown Rice for about a year now and he has grown like a weed, is very active, looks fabulous and no issues thank goodness. I feel that overall these are quality ingredients (no corn, wheat or soy, real Chicken #1 ingredient and NO powdered cellulose) at a reasonable price and easy to find in stores. So I’m happy with the choice and will stick with it until he decides he wants a change.

Your cats are drinking more water because dry food – any and all dry food is dehydrating to them ! Not good for them ! Stick to cans ! Canned diet . Less medical issues and constant hydration with canned diet .

I’m sorry, that’s really scary and suddenly I either don’t like Purina or atleast seriously re considering giving this to my cat…

Did a vet confirm with testing that Beyond caused its death, I suspect there is no documentation to this fact, and we all know can (wet) food is no better or SAFER than dry food.

Can you tell me where I can find out about these things in beyond? (bugs, mold etc).

That’s some of the symptoms I have noticed since I put my cat on in this past winter .She is thinner twitchy, licking herself . I know this isn’t the best food but I didn’t realize how bad it actually is same w their dog food.

The Grain Free does indeed not have any grains. They do include a number of supplements and I don’t know if they are needed. I was just looking for an opinion.

I have a pup staying with me for the week. She does not eat her purina beyond, and because of that she is skinny. I decided to put her on another dogfood, royal canin for small breeds and she eats it in a couple of minutes, comes thanking me after dinner. She is eating! Iam not starving a pup for an owner who falls for every marketing trick and badly executed scientific research (grains are not bad for all dogs for example is result of good science, grains are bad for all dogs is not supported by science) Her owner thinks that if her pup does not eat, well than it does not, own responsibility of the pup (!)

This is absolutely horrible and unacceptable! Our pets are part of our family. I myself, will be contacting Purina asking them why their food contains Rendered Products and then inform them our family will no longer purchase their products until they do the right thing and make the appropriate changes. I encourage everyone else to do the same. Let your voice be heard. Best of luck to you and your furry family members.

I had NO IDEA that beyond has ‘animal fat’ (dead animal stuff) in it. Also after a couple of days she got constipated. I won’t be giving her the rest of the bag. I wouldn’t eat dead people! (has anyone seen Soilent Green (movie))? where they took dead bodies and processed them to feed the people since animals and grass/trees were not on earth. What TO buy? I don’t know! 2 vets said dry food is bad for cats anyway so am sticking with wet…fancy feast (I think CLASSIC) was listed as the best in this brand. UGH! These are our PETS!

Where on the ingredient list does it say animal fat? I re-read the list multiple times.

All the cat ones say “beef fat”. I don’t think that’s necessarily bad, and the rendered meat(or meal) is extremely good for animals, even chickens. Rendering is a simple way of basically drying out and concentrating proteins in meat. I even make it myself. So I would not worry about rendered “meal” if it is good quality, but if it is true that they get some minerals and vitamins from China, I would not feed it to pets. China has a reputation for knowingly “poisoning” their own baby foods and selling vitamins/minerals that are mixed with toxic substances/are not even what they’re advertised as.

Just for clarification: Beef fat is also a rendered ingredient. And a meat meal ingredient (such as chicken meal) is not a human grade ingredient, it is a feed grade ingredient. Because it is feed grade there is no guarantee to the consumer if it is sourced from condemned animal material or USDA inspected and passed material. The pet food company might state ‘We source all of our meal ingredients from USDA facilities’ – but this tells you nothing. Condemned chicken or beef or pork come ‘From’ USDA facilities.
