Not Fit for a Dog is the Perfect Fit

Congress asks FDA to take another look at BPA

Three veterinarians that are friends and allies of concerned petsumers have stepped forward with a new book about the pet food industry.  The book is fabulous!  Not Fit for a Dog! written by Dr. Michael W. Fox, Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins, and Dr. Marion E. Smart is a wonderful book that provides an interesting medical perspective to Big Pet Food.  Great read, highly recommend it.

I have to admit, I was beyond honored when I was contacted by Deanna Krantz – Dr. Michael Fox’s wife – asking me to review the new book.  Me?  Sure!  And then I somewhat panicked.  Dr. Fox is such a hero to me.  He’s one of a handful of veterinarians out there that stands up to Big Pet Food.  But what if the book was nothing more than other pet food industry books?  What would I say in a review?  Knowing me as I do…I don’t do too good with fluff writing (aka painfully honest).  I struggled with this until the book arrived.

Well, it turns out I had nothing to worry about (what was I thinking?…look who the authors are!).  Not Fit for a Dog! is amazing.  Imagine three veterinarians that ‘get it’ about pet food, three veterinarians that see how important nutrition is to our pets.  Now imagine sitting down with these three veterinarians and asking them questions about what corn or soy does to the insides of your pet, asking them their opinion on raw food or home cooked pet food or prescription pet foods….that’s Not Fit for a Dog!  This is what the book does.  It’s medical, but not too medical.  It’s science, but not too much science.  The book gives pet owners – in no uncertain terms – medical evidence of what most commercial pet foods are doing to the health of millions of pets.

If I could wave a magic wand, and receive a free wish…I’d wish that every practicing veterinarian would read this book.  And with one more wave of my magic wand, I’d have every AVMA Diplomat that voted against the feeding of raw pet food be required to read this book too.  Not Fit for a Dog! tears apart the raw pet food misconceptions, destroys the prescription pet food fix-it theory, and so much more.  The book is common sense backed by medical science (I’d love to see how the AVMA would talk their way out of this one).

If you think you’ve read it all about the pet food industry, you haven’t.  Not Fit for a Dog! is a very unique book that I recommend to any pet food consumer that wants to learn more.  You’ll want to keep this book for reference purposes (plus there are home prepared pet food recipes in the back), so buy an extra copy for your vet.  Seriously…buy an extra copy for your vet.  Practicing veterinarians will be hard pressed to find a valid argument against the truth spoken in this book.  I can’t imagine the good that could be done if more vets understood…this book can turn the tides.

My sincere thank you to Dr. Fox, Dr. Hodgkins, and Dr. Smart for taking the time to put together such a wonderful book about the pet food industry.  I’m hopeful your words can help change the future of pet food.

Wishing you and your pet(s) the best,

The question is: why aren’t veterinarians standing on the rooftops of their buildings SHOUTING OUT about these issues?

Dr. Fox has also written earlier, about the connection between GM vegetables and melamine, the point beinng that GM vegetables are NOT “identical” to the (real) vegetables that they imitate.
