Is this just Hollywood or Do They Know what they are Pitching?

Alison Sweeney, star of The Biggest Loser, is pitching Science Diet Weight Loss System. In fact, she’s partnering with Science Diet promoting a 2011 PetFit™ Challenge. Winners (dog and cat) would win a $1 million (well…there’s a catch to winning the Big Bucks).

From AlisonSweeney.com “My dog Winky is shaping up for a healthier, happier life thanks to the Hill’s® Science Diet® Weight Loss System. I was happy to help Science Diet® get the word out about this simple and easy weight loss solution for pets. It worked for Winky!”

Here’s her video…

The ingredients of the Science Diet Weight Loss System food that Alison Sweeney says she’s feeding her dog Winky – by official AAFCO ingredient definitions – contains no meat.  The only animal protein ingredient in this dog food is Chicken by-product meal; defined as “ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing practices.”  By official AAFCO ingredient definition, by-products are not human grade.  The ingredients of the treat provided in the Science Diet Weight Loss System includes the same chicken by-product meal, plus soybean oil preserved with BHA – a chemical preservative linked to serious disease.  (to learn more about BHA visit http://chemistry.about.com/od/foodcookingchemistry/a/bha-bht-preservatives.htm or http://www.cancer-health.info/?p=15942)

And what about that ‘You could win $1,000,000’ mentioned with the PetFit™ Challenge?  Well, here’s what the contest rules say…

“Prize: Two (2) Grand Prizes are available (one (1) dog winner and one (1) cat winner): $10,000 with the opportunity to increase that prize up to a maximum of $1,000,000. Prize winner will be invited to participate in a live event with his/her pet, where either the pet (if a dog) or the owner (if pet is a cat) is given the chance, under controlled conditions, to select at random among fifty (50) options, only one of which will have a concealed prize message for $1,000,000. If that option is successfully selected on a single try (1:50), the prize is increased to $1,000,000; otherwise it will be $10,000.”

So yes, you could win a million dollars – if you are lucky enough to be chosen by Science Diet in the first place and then are lucky enough to draw one of fifty cards that has the $1,000,000 prize message on it.
Is Alison Sweeney really feeding Winky the Science Diet Weight Loss food?  Or is she simply endorsing a product utilizing on her status associated with The Biggest Loser television show?

I’ve never watched The Biggest Loser so I cannot comment if Alison Sweeney is a real health advocate or a good-for-television health advocate.  Although I respect anyone that makes a commitment to improved health through quality nutrition and exercise, I disagree with celebrity endorsement of a pet food product – ANY pet food product – that does not contain human grade meat and a variety of quality vegetables and fruit.
