Provided to TruthaboutPetFood.com by a veterinarian friend is the following notice from Hill’s Pet Food:

Following the recall, we conducted a detailed review of our canned dog foods. As we had expected, that review confirmed that the issue is isolated to the same vitamin premix used in canned dog foods and limited to specific production lots. However, our review did determine that there were additional products affected by that vitamin premix, and it is for that reason that we are expanding the recall. No dry foods, cat foods or treats are affected.

Included in this email you will find two appendices. Appendix A lists the affected canned dog food products, their SKUs, lot numbers and date codes that are being voluntarily recalled. Appendix B provides guidance for how we will retrieve and credit customers for the affected product. For reimbursement information, please visit HillsVet.com/RecallResources.

We understand that this recall has caused pet parents considerable concern and that the well-being of their pets may have been affected. We are also aware of the disruption and difficulty that this has caused you and your staff. We have addressed the issues that caused this recall, and we are working to make this right:

  • We have expanded the operating hours of our Veterinary Consultation Service and opened our consumer call center to 7 days a week.
  • We will pay for the diagnostic screening for Hypervitaminosis D for any pet consuming impacted food.
  • We will pay for continued diagnostic testing for pets with elevated Vitamin D levels until they are back to normal.
  • We will reimburse pet parents for medical treatment for an affected pet eating impacted food.
  • We are committed to the highest standards in quality and have introduced even more stringent quality checks into our existing safety processes.
  • As always, we stand behind our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee on all our products.

Appendix A

In most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of feeding.

Appendix B: Product Retrieval Process

Warehouse Delivery Customers (Truckload)

  • Your Hill’s Business Account Manager will coordinate with you on Warehouse and/or Store level retrieval.
  • If retrieving at Warehouse level – Hill’s Supply resources will coordinate directly with Customer Warehouse leads to organize the retrieval of affected product.
  • If retrieving at Store level – Hill’s Supply resources will coordinate directly with RQA (3rd Party Service Provider) to retrieve affected product.

Direct Clinic, Store or Shelter Delivery Customers

  • Hill’s Customer Service Representatives & General Pet Customer Service Representatives will begin collection of affected product aligned with your regular delivery schedule commencing Thursday, March 21st.
  • In addition, Hill’s Supply resources will coordinate directly with RQA (3rd Party Service Provider) to retrieve affected product and expedite the process where needed.
  • If a Customer prefers to return affected product via UPS, please contact Hill’s Customer Service for further instructions (Email: customerservice@hillspet.com).

Non-Direct Delivery Customers (Common Carrier/UPS)

  • Hill’s will utilize RQA (3rd Party Service Provider) to retrieve affected product and expedite the process.
  • If a Customer prefers to return affected product via UPS, please contact Hill’s Customer Service for further instructions (Email: customerservice@hillspet.com).

For VIP Market, Vet Sponsored Home Delivery & Hill’s to Home clients/consumers, these returns will be processed through their established returns process.

If client or consumer returns are received after the initial product retrieval, Hill’s will continue to work with Customers to return product in the most convenient manner.

Returned Product Credit Process

Hill’s will issue Customer account credits for all returned product claims with supporting documentation that captures SKU & Lot Code information. Hill’s will prioritize the processing of these claims based upon the order of receipt.

    So very very sad. Dog food that is made to help sick dogs is, in reality, making them sicker.

        I agree with you. I was commenting on the irony of these all being labeled to feed animals with life threatening diseases. I wish all veterinarians would stop selling this horrible poison.

    I had my puppy on the stew. I tried to call no one would answer the phone it just click off. This is terrible. My 3-4 month old puppy larger breed eats a lot. I did have at the vet. Your customer service on this issue stinks. I’m still worried about my baby. Was buying by the case and it expensive too. I have on the puppy dry. But I’m changing my food my vet wanted me to use, I had used other dogs food was good. Not any more

    Makes you wonder how much money these companies really make to constantly recall food year after year and pay all these refunds, vet fees and compensation to vets etc. And still run a profitable company ?

      Makes me wonder — if they are already so dishonest and worry only about lining their own pockets, are they just relabeling this garbage and putting it back out there with the “new and improved” labels on them? Since they govern themselves, I can see this happening. Makes me sick.

    I am so pissed/upset! My dogs are still eating the i/d! My Vet is still feeding it at the clinic. My 3 have medical issues that cannot eat a home cooked meal and I trusted the prescription food company. Beyond pissed! They just ate i/d 30 mins ago and it better not be one of the recalled cans!!!

      Please check if it was recalled..My dog was also on this “vet recommended” food, and I only found out about this recall from Hills on FB last night. I was mortified, as he has been on this diet for awhile, and lasts month was showing some signs of vitamin D toxcicity. I just purchased a case with 6 cans consumed by my pup when I found out,, and ithis case was recalled in Jan .this stuff was not checked by vet office before it was put on the shelf or when I bought it last week!!!. As the recall stated stop feeding immediately.so please check, he is going off this product, I am going raw, heck I would rather feed him a steak…(oh, the vet office offered me another case…not a chance!!!!!

        My dog died I wasn’t notified by anyone. My sister in TX called me & asked if I heard on TV about Hills Recalls. I hadn’t. I even bought my food from my vet. My life hasn’t been the same since she died. It is a slow antagonizing death. I even gave her IV fluids every day at home hoping she’d heal. She didn’t.

      My dog died. I NEVER heard about a recall until my sister called me from TX. She heard it on news I was buying Hills from her vet. They never even told me. I was trying to give her every opportunity to heal. I was giving her IV treatment daily at home. But her body was too poisoned by it.

    Please stop feeding any processed, mass produced foods with cheap fillers and unnatural ingredients. You won’t have toxic levels of Vitamin D if you aren’t feeding synthetic vitamin packs found in processed foods. Buy raw or cooked products made with REAL ingredients. Skip the dry food – it is 30-70% carbohydrates, and dogs need protein and fat, not carbs. Your dog would not eat wheat, corn or soy in their natural state. Vet school requires almost no training in nutrition. Let the vets stitch up the wounds, spay and neuter. Leave the nutrition for those who care enough to study. And use common sense. Do you feed yourself the same can of food every day?

    I have a batch of Hills low fat prescription diet 3391 10 2020 T27 which is not on the list. 3391 09 2020 T27 is on the list. We buy our food is small pallets, I fed my dog four tins of this food, she vomited and was so I’ll each time. I gave her a bland diet in between and the final can I isolated when I fed her where she vomited7 times and I took her to the vet and handed the good back over. The vet said the food was fine as it wasn’t on the list but I know this batch is contaminated and should be recalled as well. Has anyone else had any experience with this batch?

    It should be illegal for any vet to sell food . They have a profit based interest . This is insane. The past doctors who told pregnant women to smoke, are the same as vest giving this garbage to pets to “heal them”, while it makes them sicker and more profits in the pockets of hills and the vets.

    On January 31, Hill’s Pet Nutrition voluntarily recalled 25 varieties of canned dog food products due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D.

    DSM produced the vitamin premix involved in the recall of 25 varieties of canned dog food from Hill’s Pet Nutrition, which Colgate-Palmolive owns. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration disclosed that information in an enforcement report.

    The recalled products had up to 70 times the intended amount of vitamin D.

    “DSM Nutritional Products was notified by a customer (Hills Pet Nutrition) that they were doing a recall after a dog had become ill after consuming Hills Prescription Diet W/D canned dog food,” wrote FDA officials in the report. “DSM Nutritional Products supplied Hills Pet Nutrition the DSM vitamin premix : Brand name: 2217 Canned Canine PMX…”
    History of Hill’s Pet Nutrition dog food recall for excess vitamin D

    On December 3, 2018, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to consumers about numerous dog food recalls related to excessive levels of vitamin D. Sunshine Mills, a co-packer or contract manufacturer, seems to have produced all the recalled dog foods, although the pet foods were marketed under different names. The recalled products were sold nationwide.

    “FDA scientists have evaluated samples of some of these products, and state and private lab test results indicate that the food contained as much as approximately 70 times the intended amount of vitamin D…” wrote FDA officials in the announcement.

    On January 31, Hill’s Pet Nutrition voluntarily recalled 25 varieties of canned dog food products due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D.
