Big failure With FDA Recall Notice

Did pets die because FDA didn’t promptly send out a recall notice for a Christmas treat?

An inexcusable recall notice was sent out by FDA today. The recall notice is dated 12/9/21, BUT…the FDA publication of the recall wasn’t published until almost a month later on 1/4/22.

This recall was for a pet (both dog and cat) Advent Calendar, the treats in the Advent Calendar posed a “potential choking hazard” for pets consuming them. ALDI did receive consumer complaints on the pet treats.

So why did FDA wait until Christmas was over to issue a recall notice on a Christmas pet treat? On January 4, 2022 (date of FDA publication of the recall) the treats in the Advent Calendar that were a potential choking hazard would have already been fed to pets. Did the FDA month long delay in this recall notice result in pet deaths?

ALDI removed the Calendars from store shelves after the December 9, 2021 recall was issued…but what about the pet owners who purchased the Advent Calendar before the treats were removed? Those pet owners were not notified in a timely manner by FDA as with all other recalled pet foods and treats.

It is a complete failure of the recall system for the FDA to issue the press release a month after the actual recall. We have asked the FDA for an explanation for the month long delay. Should the agency respond, it will be shared.

If your pet was sicked or killed due to these treats, please contact us.

Wishing all a Happy New Year!
