The Official Unofficial Dumping Ground

Flood damaged crops? Sell it to pet food.

Flood damaged crops? Sell it to pet food.

As we have seen on the news, Louisiana is suffering from damaging floods. The August floods not only left residents homeless, the floods damaged crops. From DeltaFarmPress.com “About 75 percent of our rice is located in southwest Louisiana,” says Dustin Harrell, LSU AgCenter rice specialist. “A lot of the area got 18 to 24 – even more than 24 – inches of rain. That caused a lot of flooding, including rice fields. Water from many of the initial rains actually did begin to recede before backwater flooding moved in from bayous, streams and rivers.”

Of concern to pet food consumers (bold added): “Water that goes over the headed rice, or rice that lodges and lays over in the water, can definitely cause economic damage. If it’s mature, it won’t take long for the grain in the heads to sprout. If it drains early enough, the rice can still be harvested even though the quality will suffer. There is a market for at least some of that type of rice – things like pet food. Rice that’s submerged for an extended period will rot, become rancid.”

Pet food is the Official Unofficial Dumping Ground for all things waste. ‘Official’ because of statements like the above and FDA Compliance Policies; regulatory authorities openly allow waste to be dumped into pet food. ‘Unofficial’ because pet food consumers are NEVER warned.

The FDA and each State Department of Agriculture openly allows waste…garbage…trash to be dumped into pet food and each allow this garbage to be called ‘food’. No consumer is ever warned. Unknowingly consumers are spending good money for bad pet food; waste pet food.

The FDA said their true feelings in a meeting earlier this year. “You want 3+ billion pounds of animal products to be landfilled?” Feel free to replace the words ‘animal products’ with just about anything; in this case ‘You want 3+ billion pounds of flood damaged rice to be landfilled?’

Pet food should NOT be the Official Unofficial Dumping Ground for all things waste.

Pet food should NOT be called food if it does not meet food law. Waste ingredient, flood damaged rice pet food is not food.

It’s criminal.

My thanks to one of you wonderful readers out there for sending me the DeltaFarmPress.com article.

Just shaking my head continuously with what these companies are putting in our dogs food. This is why I just am going to switch to making my own again. Yes it can be a bit more expensive but really, when you factor in your vet visits, it’s way cheaper! These outfits are just concerned with the $, not the pets and it’s the pets and us pet lover’s that are being hurt or killed in the long run. To be honest, I don’t this part will EVER change. Profit, profit, profit and to who’s expense?

You are right, I think it probably will never change. Not even sure if the good guys who make pet food can really know where their stuff comes from.

Here in the Midwest – this ad:
WANTED DAMAGED GRAIN anywhere. We buy damaged grain in any condition, wet or dry, including damaged silage corn at Top Dollar. We have vacs and trucks.
—Where do you suppose this grain goes?
