  1. I no longer trust Purina and I’m trying to find a healthier brand that my cat will eat. He’s 6 years old and means the world to me!! Before I got Pixel, I lost a cat to diabetes that I now think was caused by Purina, because a friend lost her cat after I did, also ate Purina. And back when I didn’t know any better, I lost another one to stomach cancer. Also Purina. ENOUGH!!!

    • My cat, Sadie, died in 2010 a few months after I put her on Purina One. I couldn’t prove it, but she wasn’t acting the same after going on Purina One. My cat, Mits, is diabetic and I have her on Blue Basic. She loves it dry but won’t eat the canned Blue.

    • Hi Judy, Check out “Taste of the Wild” dry cat food. My cats love it and their fur looks fabulous. But most important, they are healthly!

      • Please read the enclosed link you may change your mind about feeding your cats dry food all together.
        http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FeedingYourCat18pages8-10.pdf

        • NO DRY FOOD FOR CATS……IT IS BETTER TO FEED THE CHEAPEST WET FOOD THAN THE MOST EXPENSIVE DRY FOOD. I DON’T AGREE WITH THE CHEAPEST, BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE A PET, YOU SHOULD CARE FOR IT THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY. TOO MANY PEOPLE JUST ARE NOT EDUCATING THEMSELVES OR DON’T WANT TO.

I HAVE 2 14 YR OLD FEMALES, EACH HAS A HEALTH PROBLEM (KIDNEY DISEASE IN ONE AND LYMPHOMA IN THE OTHER.

I NOW HAVE 2 HEALTHY MALES 2 YRS OLD (I ADOPTED THEM FROM MY DAUGHTER WHO DIED WHEN HER KITTIES WERE 4 MONTHS OLD) THEY WERE ON FRISKIES WET FOOD AND SOME OTHER DRY KIBBLE. SHE DID NOT BUY THE UNHEALTHY FOOD, AS SHE KNOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF ORGANIC.

I AM KEEPING HER BOYS HEALTHY AS THEY WERE HER LEGACY. I WEANED THEM FROM THE FRISKIES (LABEL READING, UGH!!!!) TO A HIGH QUALITY CANNED FOOD. THEY WERE ALL PICKY. I AM WEANING THEM OFF THE KIBBLE, AND WILL ONLY GIVE THEM A TABLESPOON AS A TREAT ONCE A DAY.

I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR A GOOD CANNED FOOD, GRAIN FREE AND NO CARRAGEENAN. EVERY ONE I TRIED, THEY HATED. THEY ALL LOVE DAVE’S TUNA AND SALMON IN ASPIC. IT IS ALL FISH AND OVER THE LONG HAUL, NOT A GOOD IDEA BECAUSE OF THE MERCURY IN LARGE FISH AND ONE OF THE INGREDIENTS IS CARRAGEENAN. STUDIES SHOW THIS INGREDIENT IS CARCINOGENIC. LOOK IT UP. SO NOW I AM GOING TO HAVE TO WEAN THEM FROM THE DAVE’S TO HOMEMADE OR FREEZE DRIED RAW FOOD. A LOT OF WORK, PLUS I CANNOT LEAVE THE RAW FOOD OUT MORE THAN 30 MINUTES. IF THEY CHOW DOWN, FINE, BUT IF THEY ARE SLOW AND PICKY, THEN WHAT?

THIS IS NOT AN EASY PROCESS FOR ANY OF US. PLUS SOME PEOPLE CANNOT AFFORD THE BEST, ORGANIC WET FOOD. OH AND I TRIED NEWMAN’S OWN ORGANIC AND THEY HATED IT.

IF YOU SUBSCRIBE TO PETSUMERREPORTS, YOU WILL FIND ALL THE PET FOODS RATED AND HOW MANY RED FLAGS IN EACH BRAND. AGAIN, MY HEROINE, SUSAN THIXTON…..BLESS HER!

    • Feed your cats wet food, without grain and without BPA in the can and no by products. Kibble will eventually ruin the health of a cat. They need meat, they are obligate carnivores. Buy Susan Thixtons book. Purina was our go to food, but recently I only bought PURINA ONE AND BEYOND because it had no by products. No more!,!!!! if you want a pretty good canned food at a decent price, try Dave’s. vets know nothing about nutrition. They are in the hands of Science Diet…..read the labels all the time. The pet food industry lies to us. They don’t give a —- about our pets. They just make money.

    • one of our cats used to puke a lot and we thought that it was just cuz of her breed but our vet had us try cat food made by Fromm and she no longer pukes and our other cats love it and their coats are healthy now!!!!

      • I use Fromm for my dogs and cats now…it is an AWESOME food! So glad I found it!

      • After losing my yellow lab to cancer (thanks to Science Diet food) I put our new dog on Fromm. It is healthy and I trust the company. I also use Prymal freeze dried raw and mix it with the Fromm.

        • I like your formula. I believe Fromm is a good food. I can only find the kibble at my local pet store. Where do you buy the canned and the Prymal Raw Food?

      • Fromm is a good food. Your vet recommended it? I commend your vet!

      • Another recommendation for Fromm. I feed their canned food and Orijen’s dry food. The kitties love it and their health has improved so much.

  2. They should have recalled it for all the horrible ingredients in it.

    • I always thought the ingrediants were good, I use Purina One catfood for sensitive stomachs and the first ingredient is meat. What do you mean?

      • I had a cat previously that was on Iams and got fatty liver disease and passed so I stopped using that food, my cat’s I have now were on Science Diet and they threw up so much it was crazy, since switching to Purina One sensitive stomach they hardly throw up at all.

        • You should go to the dogfoodproject.com to check out all dog & cat foods. They do a full review of ingredients and then you’ll know if you are using a good food or not for your pets.

          • Another good site is the Susan Thixton has: There is a charge to join but it is not much and worth every cent.

            It is truthaboutpetfood.com

You will get alert you need and you can check ingredients, etc. Also, there are the “worst pet foods ingredients” and the “best pet food ingredients”
Just google If you have an over weight cat, go to Lisa Pierson DVM and check out Obesity in Cats

        • Hill’s Science Diet is the worst. But so is Purina, if you are reading all these comments. Get a good all natural food and hopefully a wet food.

  3. Amen…..read Susan’s book. It is a real eye opener.

  4. I USED to buy Purina foods. I thought they were decent foods. Boy, was I WRONG!! My cats did nothing but vomit while on Purina foods,no matter which variety I tried!! And one dog had a massive stroke and the other developed stomach pancreas cancer while being fed Purina’s Beneful food.

I have since switched to a holistic food, and though more expensive, my cats do not vomit any more, and my vet says my 2 new dogs are “a picture of health, in perfect condition”!!

It is a horrible shame that I had to lose 2 dogs, and my cats were sickly for YEARS before I woke up and realized what GARBAGE ANY Purina food is!!

I wish they would go out of business, period!! Before any more animals get sick and die!!

  5. I love purina one but I only feed my dogs the lamb one.

    Lamb is healthier.

Purina one is one of the best brands I’ve given my dog

    • I fed My two Cat’s Purinas Medley, and Pro-Plan they developed Diabetes and Cancer, they Died, I can never forgive myself for feeding them Purina. How come ? Purina is still in Business ?
Because ! There is ONLY One “Susan Thixston” we need more Susan’s to protect our Pet’s from these horrible Money hungry Purinas.
I hate them with All my Heart.

    • I cannot give you advice. You need to follow your instincts. I can tell you this: about a week ago, I made a telephone call to Purina and spoke to very nice man in Customer Service. I had the list of ingredients from the bag of Purina one and BEYOND which I had been feeding my cats. I was the only dry food that I could find that did not have Chicken or meat by products. Do you know what goes into the by products? It would seriously make you sick to your stomach. Well, when we got to the supplements and vitamins, I ask him to tell me what the source is. After being off the phone for awhile, he had to admit China. That is enough to scare me into throwing the food away! There are no controls in China, and the supplements are not approved by the FDA.

READ EVERY LABEL AND MAKE TELEPHONE CALLS. THEY DO NOT USE HUMAN GRADE INGREDIENTS.

  6. When it comes to cats, raw diets are the way to go. My cat is 17 yrs. old. She looks fantastic and better yet her lab work is perfect. I run lab work including a urinalysis and thyroid every 6 months on her and all values have stayed consistent through out her life. She walks with the dogs and I at a brisk trot for 2 miles every day. People never believe me when I tell them how old she is. I switched her to raw when she was 3yrs old and had all kinds of urinary issues. Immediately her issues cleared up never to return.

  7. maryllen candace reichard

thanks for keeping us up to date.
I like many wish I had done my home work sooner. I used to work as a vet tech. in D.C. area in the 1970′s when cats started coming in urinary plugged. I made up my own question sheet,we had 5 full time vets and I was their vet tech from the 2nd class out of Baltimore (DR.( Nazerky sp)anyway I noticed the high ASH content in the dry cat food . Some as high as 18% can you imagine? The sales men laughed at me along with others when I pointed this out to them–suddenly they stopped laughing and the ash dropped down to approx. 3 1/2 % —beware of any dog or cat food that they like TOO much going so far as to tearing into the bags as soon as they can get to
it as you come in the door. It is made to make them CRAVE it and you buy more because you feel guilty—not only is it not quality it makes them over weight and diabetics —
as far as exercise and yards most dogs I see out side are lying under a bush most of the day until owners come home to play with them (like i.e. LIONS/wild animals etc. seen on PBS) -just like what the food industry has done to us.
When I grew up we seldom heard of these problems in people or animals. And our old relatives just sat reading the paper and rocked into their 80,s and 90,s. I started using Dr. Donald R.Strombeck,DVM,PhD 1999 Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets University CA Davis as a guide before Susan,s book came out. My daughter bought Susan’s for me but hasn’t turned loose of it yet. Oh, another dog food problem hmm, bladder stones in dogs that are not genetic i.e. certain breeds.
Thanks for allowing me to vent. One suggestion go with your instincts—–even when people make fun of you even some vets just like MD’s forget that they are not G-ds and then some work with G-d and us–thank goodness—it is a partnership. Just got to find them before it is too late for our animals and our babies/us.
Sincerely, M. C. Reichard,RN back into my cyber closet. good luck everyone.

—we love our pets who give us so much — especially when you open that front door— and loneliness when they are no longer there to greet us.

    • Wish there were more people like you! We should all be marching for natural or raw or homemade, supporting the companies that are not killing our pets…….and marching against the Purina, Hill’s…..the companies that are for profit only.

Just think, one serving of that salmonella contaminated food could make a small dog very sick or die. Plus, we handle the food!!

      So scary.

  8. Buyer Beware: The Crimes, Lies and Truth about Pet Food by Susan Thixton (Mar 30, 2011) , read this and be forewarned!!!!!!!

  9. I personally don’t trust anything by Purina. So many of their products contain junk in it, that even if they came out with an outstanding food (not likely, I know) I would not buy it because I just think it’s wrong for a company to make money off of feeding corn, wheat, and soy to our pets. I was talking to someone who was using Canyon Creek Ranch because her sister works for Nestle Purina, who makes it, and was saying how great it was. Well, if it’s so great, why don’t they make ALL their food that way??? I will not buy any food from any brand that uses corn, wheat, soy, by-products, coloring (dogs don’t care what color something is!!!!) in any of their products.

My pets have been using Blue, and have not had any problems. They all got so soft, it’s a joy to pet them! I was chided by someone when I was talking to someone else about how soft my MinPin’s coat was. This woman sternly told me that MinPins should not have “soft” coats, you can’t show them if they have soft coats. Well, my MinPin cuddles with me, so the softer the better!!! I’m not a fan of “dog shows” because of who sponsors them (pedigree, purina, etc.)

  10. Another thought: Purina is buying the largest Pet Adoption company in the US. What food will that company be suggesting, or selling. If you go to a Pet Store and look at the animals for adoption, Hill’s Science diet label is on the pet crate. If that cat has been eating Hill’s Science Diet, it is already on it’s way to bad health.
