Natura Pet Food Recall

During a recent random sampling, the FDA confirmed the presence of salmonella in one of our products. We take this extremely seriously, because your pets are like ours – they’re part of the family – and we aren’t taking any chances.

From the Natura website Natura Products

Dear Natura Family,

As pet parents and dedicated pet health advocates, it pains us to inform you of the first recall in our company’s 21-year history.

During a recent random sampling, the FDA confirmed the presence of salmonella in one of our products. We take this extremely seriously, because your pets are like ours – they’re part of the family – and we aren’t taking any chances. As a result, we have voluntarily recalled a number of our products as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, there have been no reported animal or human health issues associated with these products, and we have confirmed that this is not a widespread issue.

Natura was founded on the commitment to provide the healthiest natural pet food in the world. As Natura employees who live this commitment every day, words cannot express our disappointment with this finding. We place quality as the cornerstone of our products. It is a process of ongoing improvement, and we will continually review and raise these standards. Unfortunately, salmonella and other contaminants pose a great challenge to the food industry, and no company is immune.

We want to assure you, our valued customers, that we are more committed than ever to animal and human safety. We have fully investigated and identified the cause of this incident. Our production is ongoing, and you can continue to feed any Natura products outside of this incident with confidence.

We know that trust is earned. This incident further fuels our passionate commitment to your pet’s health and safety. We promise to demonstrate this commitment through our actions now and in the future.

Sincerely,
Employees of Natura Pet Products

I feed the Evo chicken and turkey little bites for dogs. Is it ONLY the 4 oz size that is affected? This is the ONLY food my sensitive tummy dog has ever done well on. I will boil chicken before switching her right now, but that is the only dog food in my house. Are we safe?

Sorry – the only information we have right now is above. We don’t know if the recall will expand – as do many Salmonella recalls. This is something we will just have to wait and see what the future brings. Sorry.

I just wanted to clarify that these are all dry ferret, cat, and dog food (kibble). This detail was contained in the letter from Natura, but was omitted in your post above.

I feed healthwise chicken meal & oatmeal, I just opened a new bag this week. It isn’t on the list, however my dog had loose stools twice this week which is very unusual. I don’t want to switch him yet again. It seems like everytime I think a food is ok something goes wrong. Since his bowels have only been loose twice, and its not on the list, I’m concerned and unsure if I should chance it or give up on this food too.

I can only tell you that my dog’s food Evo Weight Management lot number is not on the list (it missed the cut-off date by three months). However, my dog has been very sick since 3/8 with the symptoms of salmonella. If it were me I would not take a chance and if it is possible that your dogs are ill due to the food contact the FDA. Perhaps, the recall needs to be expanded.

I found out the dogs got into the garbage one day and one ate something outside while being walked (when hubby & daughter helped out). So far this bag hasn’t caused anymore poop issues, but the pup has runny eyes and a bit itchy so I am going to switch him anyway just to be safe. Thank you!

Good to hear your dogs are doing better and it is not the food. I hope you find a food tht works for your puppy. I will be going back to Dogswell Nutrisca, once my dog is feeling better, then transition to homemade. I changed him over to EVO because he was gaining weight. EVO Weight Management had less Carbs. Evidently, that was not such a good idea.

        Cynthia,
I feed my pigs this as well. I buy 3 bags at a time and only 1 of the bags was on the recall list. HOWEVER, I am betting my bottom dollar that 6.6 pound bags with lot # 2276A70003 exp 10/02/13 is next. My boys are sick! I am now fixing a bland diet. FUN!!!

The canned EVO Turkey and Chicken Formula that sickened my cats isn’t even on this recall list!

And the two cases I purchased before the cans from the current case that made them sick, are not listed either. Fortunately, my cats wouldn’t eat the foul-smelling, whitish colored gunk from my initial order, so I returned them only to receive 2 new cases that included the cans that made them sick.

Getting 4 bad cases in the last month, makes me wonder how far this goes. Terrible to see so many different Natura products recalled.

      March 22, 2013 at 3:55 pm

Interesting…Since I stopped feeding the EVO canned, my 3 cats stopped having soft, stinky stool.
Their little Ragdoll butts don’t have anymore poop smears.

Please contact the FDA. Natura told me yesterday that they have no reported cases of pets/owners getting sick from the recalled pet food. Please report your experience and let the FDA investigate if the recall needs to be extended.

          Cynthia,
I did contact the FDA and a rep came a couple days later and picked up 3 cases and 10 cans, plus the can that made my cats sick. I hope others whose pets got sick do the same.

          • Cynthia

            March 25, 2013 at 11:10 am

Thank you for letting me know. How is your cat doing? The FDA just called and asked me to drop off a sample of Koty poop so they can run tests. I mentioned that I had seen several pet owners on a couple of blogs who have had sick pets after their pet ate Natura products when they became ill. She said the only way they can do something about this is if people make complaints. I hope the recall is expanded before more animals are sickened. Good news is that most animals will come back from this unlike the 2007 mass recalls. Hope your Kitty is all better.

That’s a pretty big damn list. How horrifying to think how many pets will become sick from this! And I have a bag of Innova Turkey & Chicken in my pantry! Though we only feed it on occasion and it’s been here long enough that we haven’t had any problems with our cats eating it.

Folks, if you don’t already know this, may I offer a suggestion. I am a Certified Natural Health Professional and have used herbs and natural alternatives for our cats for over 20 years. If you have a pet who becomes sick from contaminated food, please do not hesitate to give them a capsule of Activated Charcoal. It will absorb the toxins, keeping them from being absorbed into the bloodstream. Also, some Homeopathic remedies that may be helpful are: Pyrogenium 30c, Carbo Animalis or Carbo Vegetalis 30C, Arsenicum Album 30C or Nux Vomica 30C. I recommend keeping Activated Charcoal on hand at all times before an emergency arises. We take it ourselves in the event of stomach upset. It can be purchased in any drugstore or Health Food Store. The remedies as well can be purchased in the Health Food Store and any Alternative Care pet book could help you with which remedy to give, though any one of them would probably help in the event of stomach upset. I highly recommend Dr. Donald Hamilton’s pet book, “The Homeopathic Treatment of Dogs & Cats”. Let’s hope no pets are ill because of this though. Thank you, Susan, for informing us!

A natural pet product for consideration….information taken from the website:
        http://greatlifedogfood.com/
**LIFE SUPPORT Canine & Feline Paste**
THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE IN EVERY HOME!
SAVED MANY ANIMAL LIVES DURING 2007 PET FOOD RECALL with added charcoal. Older dogs should use this product as a regular routine!

        Not available in VA.

        Ingredients
All Natural Ingredients: Activated Charcoal, Coconut Oil, Vegetable Oil, Natural Plant Vitamins, Electrolytes, Full Spectrum Enzymes, Dandelion Root, Pre-Probiotics, Milk Thistle, Colostrum, Minerals, Burdock Root and additional ingredients…
Many pet food companies utilize marketing techniques that include beautiful labels and attractive pricing to increase consumer spending. To make these price points, quality ingredients are compromised for profit. Is it any wonder that more and more dogs and cats are leading sicker lives?

Puppies / kittens are especially prone to diarrhea when you realize the earth, food and everything in it is new to them. Diarrhea in a young puppies / kittens can be serious and may lead to intestinal, organ damage, dehydration and hospitalization. Antibiotics will completely destroy all of the bacteria within the intestinal tract. All of these common causes of intestinal irritation need a follow-up treatment of pre-probiotics to replenish the beneficial “good” bacteria. Life Support – Rapid Action Paste is all of that and more. It contains actual living colonies of good bacteria, ready to set-up housekeeping in the intestinal tract of your pet.

When these good bacteria thrive, the “bad-guys,” find habitation very inhospitable.

Life Support-Rapid Action Paste is fast acting, pleasant tasting and comes in an easy to administer paste within a “dial a gram” disposable tube. Life Support – Rapid Action Paste will jump start a poor appetite while it stops dehydration, organ distress and removes toxins.

BE SAFE – NOT SORRY! Can be used even if your pet doesn’t show symptoms.

Lots of salmonella recalls lately. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened to almost every brand. It makes me wonder what is actually going on here. When will the human food recalls start?

  7. Brandi

    March 18, 2013 at 7:15 pm

How do they get away with saying this is their first recall in 21 years? Proctor and Gamble bought the company 3 years ago. They’ve had plenty of recalls.

    • Miller

      March 30, 2013 at 1:33 am

My thoughts exactly – had they not sold out to P&G they wouldn’t have a recall now… large commercial business streamline process to make more money – not to make better products. The marketing department is responsible for making the consumer *think* they are better products. I have to admit I didn’t know California Natural was owned by P&G – I will be switching food after this bag – I don’t support large companies that kill animals with low cost ingredients and using animals for testing chemical products! P&G sucks – so do all large commercial for profit companies – they do not care about consumers – the only care about $$ and shareholders…

      • Cynthia

        March 24, 2013 at 7:51 pm

Please contact your local FDA and lodge a complaint. My dog is also sick for over two weeks. He became sick after changing over to EVO Weight Management dry dog food with the same symptoms as salmonella. His bag of food missed the recall date by three months, which is only 15 days 12/17/13-1/2/14 (the expiration date on his bag is 9/25/13). I talked to a rep. from Natura yesterday 3/23/ who reported “there is no cases of illness do to the recall. If this is a bigger problem the previous thought then the FDA needs to know. We don’t want anyone else to go through this.

Carnivores do not tend to be affected by salmonella unless they have a severely weakened immune system.must be a lot of really weak animals out there for all these complaints….

    • Bimpy

      March 23, 2013 at 5:46 pm

Well maybe the things they say, research they quote, and things you read about carnivores not being affected aren’t really the truth. Where did they get that info?, really not a lot of studies done on animals with more than a hundred in the sample group. Don’t believe everything you read online, especially posts on comment sections recommending “herbal nutrition” based on studies in humans. Did you know that felines are not supposed to have propylene glycol per the FDA? It is in many dog products, meds & canned food for texture. Watch what human grade products you use that have this, it’s in many hand lotions and cosmetics, fast food, most processed foods. Read the ingredients for everything, most vets don’t even know about this. The FDA monitors for human foods only. Just started recently checking pet foods for salmonella. They don’t check for much more than that.

Two things always seem to be going on during these recall events. #1, positive samonella testing is tied to specific lots of specific brand-formulas. Consumers sometimes corroborate their pet getting sick from the brand formula mentioned. But #2, often the owners are reporting that pets are getting sick from additional foods. While it is also being reported that healthy pets should not be affected by the pressence of samonella. This recall information always turns out to be quite confusing.
    .
Is it a coincidence that pets are getting sick from more brands-formulas than mentioned? Is it because owners are paying more attention when these recalls are mentioned? Is it because more pet foods in general than are being tested or are being reported are compromised? Is it because a broad range of manufacturers use the same ingredient resources with food already containing samonella? Or is it because the manufacturing plant (or processing system) is at fault contaminating the food being produced? Is it necessary for the FDA to do more routine or spot testing of all foods all the time? These recalls have been going on for a very long time now, and nothing seems to be improving, except to identify more and more brand-formulas over time.
    .
It would seem that home cooking really is the only answer to peace of mind.

Our little terrier mix has been having trouble with the Cal Natural Kangaroo formula. I gradually tried to switch to the lamb formula, she immediately had diarrhea…neither bag has the product code listed….I think there is more to this recall than what is reported. I am done with Natura. She is a dog who also has trouble with vaccinations, I consider her the “litmus test” for my kennel.

What’s interesting is that Natura went about 20 years without a single recall.

Then they get bought by P&G.

And now in a little over a year, nearly all of the Natura brands have been recalled.

Par for the course for P&G. No company knows how to ruin a good food quicker.

      March 21, 2013 at 5:17 pm

It’s sad because they started as a nice independent pet food company but whenever you have a company that also makes laundry detergent and toothpaste, less care is given to the pet food and corners cut and then this happens. I fed taste of the wild for years until it was sold to diamond– my dog started having diarrhea when the recipe
Changed (vet said health wise he was fine) and so I switched to something else and he was good again. I hated to see such a good product go downhill like that. Pretty soon we won’t have many choices left once the big box companies buy up all of our favorite pet foods.

      • Sara Wilson at Island Dog Outfitters

        March 22, 2013 at 1:18 pm

We are an independent, small pet supply store. Natura Pet foods were a foundation product for us when we opened our business six years ago.

Even prior to May 2010, when we were advised by Natura Pet that this change of ownership was going to take place we discontinued the brand and had already sought out alternative producers of pet food that we felt we could stand behind with confidence.

Pet food producers that also have exclusive interest in small stores.

This is getting rediculous! Proctor and Gamble buys companies, then the foods get recalled. I use to give my dogs Evo, Innova, and California Naturals…the cost was way too high for the volume of food that you get. When they sold out to Proctor and Gamble, I stopped buying that food. Proctor and Gamble, Diamond Foods and Menu Foods are bad news when it comes to making dog food and cat food. Good luck to everyone.

I changed my dog over to the Innova Senior Dog last week converting him over a 7 day period. When I was feeding him Innova only, he had diarrhea that I could not get to stop. Yesterday, I decided to read up on what could be causing his diarrhea and the 1 big thing was changing food. Yesterday afternoon I received the Facebook post about this recall. Immediately went to Petco, picked up his old food, and put him on rice/turkey baby food. He has not had diarrhea since. I agree, there is more to this food issue than is being posted.

Can someone tell me where the lot codes are on the 15.4 lb bag of Evo Turkey & Chicken Cat food. The only numbers I find are on the proof of purchase label, and they don’t look similar at all. Thx.

    • Susan Thixton

      March 19, 2013 at 10:39 am

The lot number location varies with each product. You are looking for a ‘stamped’ number – not ‘printed’ information. The lot number will also be located next to a ‘Best by’ date.

We should keep in mind that as you increase testing frequency and detection technology, you are going to have more and more positive results than in the past. Also, recalls that reach across the whole processing plant and lines like this one tell me exactly what happened: FDA took enviornmental swabs and found a positive. This means that they could have swabbed the drains (as in a past huge recall). If you have a positive drain swab in your plant, you then have to prove that none of your product was affected. Without testing every single bag this is impossible. However, it is also possible that it was a product contact surface that tested positive, and so the same would be true-you have to prove that everything DOESNT have salmonella. Most plants have difficulty (as would any human plant if the USDA shut them down everytime they had a positive swab on product contact surfaces). So, if there is no outbreak or sicknesses involved, it could mean that the product is not contaminated. This is just a “what if”, but in my past experience this is how many recalls have been initiated.

While it may be, that in the past recalls were put into motion by a random swabbed, drain as you suggest, it does not seem to be the case here. According to Natura “During a recent random sampling, the Michigan Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of salmonella in one of our products.” Dated 3/18/13 http://www.naturapet.com/recall
Personally, when it comes to my pets health and safety I chose to error on the side of caution.

I just want to say, only my opinion, i would never buy pet food from the same company that makes my deoderant & shampoo. Also i won’t buy any pet food that (falsely) advertises & performs invasive animal testing. Anyone see the latest iams commercial? The boy with his black & grey cat? Anyone notice it’s the same cat in the friskies commercials? Either make your own or buy from a company that only makes pet food. Boycott petsmart & all those “big box” stores that have no say in the products they carry. Buy from a local independant store whose owners have most likely researched & carefully chosen the foods/products they carry. Again, just my opinion.

I wouldn’t buy your deodorant and shampoo from them either since P&G tests all their product ingredents on animals.

I agree, plus in supporting local small pet stores, we are supporting small businesses who put the love and effort into their store and started it out of love for their pets and will pay attention to recall lists. I have a few of these in my city and none of them sell anything from a recall list and the staff is truely knowledgeable about product– something you just don’t get at petsmart. So I trust their opinion on foods and recommendations. Helps us pet parents stay connected!

This is very upsetting. I used to fed my dachshund Innovate Senior Plus, but had to switch when she became allergic to chicken & turkey. I feed both of my dogs Taste of the Wild but I’m not thrilled about Diamond’s track record. Any suggestions on food?

We are a non profit veterinary clinic,(rescue group) established in 1997.
Way, way back, when we were informed by a pet food company just how much the ingredients that fill a can actually cost, 1 cent (small can), 3 cents (large can), we really delved into the ingredients used. Since that time we refuse to buy or feed, even the best “junk”. We only feed cooked chicken, rice and vegetables, they all love it. All have beautiful shiny coats and are extemely healthy. Compare the cost of a 20lb bag of rice to the cost of a 20lb bag of “junk”. As a clinic we could make money on the “most vet recommended brands” but no we will not stock it. The pet food is not only making money for the manufacturers and pet stores but it is also making money for the veterinarians who deal with much more than just loose stools, many pet problems are derived from the food they have to eat.

My boston Terrier had been having trouble this last month with gas/pain . I had been feeding Rachual Rays chicken and something for a year…the last bag is what I had trouble with. Enough I took him to the Vet. He gave him pain relief. this continued and I finally changed food Rachual Ray Zero grain Turkey..so far no trouble. I threw out half the bag of the Chicken….could it be manufactured at one of these recall plants.

My Maine Coon fell in love last week with sample of EVO Turkey & Chicken Formula so I bought a 2.2# bag Monday 3/18 and she began eating it. Tuesday she started yowling and pacing around and seemed to be straining to poop, then did 2 stinky messes outside the litterpan. Wednesday I heard about the recall and stopped feeding it even though our bag’s code 3010A70004 was not in your recall. (I shop at Hounds and Kitties in Maitland, FL.)

Please contact the FDA in your area. I talked to a rep. from Natura yesterday 3/23/13 who reported “there is no cases of illness do to the recall food.” Obviously, this is not true. If they don’t know it is because owners are not informing them. Please contact the FDA so this can be investigated.

Cynthia, They are lying to everyone about reported cases of illness, I am sure they have plenty of them and plenty of pet deaths too. They insist it isn’t their food when you call them. My cat just DIED from their poison food after three months of agony, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, cramping, complete muscle loss, he stopped meowing, his paw pads turned from black to pink, his pee was foamy, it was the most horrible experience, and when he started to have convulsions I thought I was going to die myself! And with all this they still insist it wasn’t their food!! They absolutely refuse to accept any responsibility and have treated me in a disgusting way. They offered to pay about 20% of an over $4000 vet bill if I sign away all rights. PROCTOR&GAMBLE what happened to your company????

I used to feed my cats Evo and when the company was bought by P&G, the pet store owner from whom I bought the food, warned me. I kept feeding them the Evo for a little while more and have since switched to something else. So glad I dodged that bullet!

Natura (before P & G) always raved about buying from human sourced food like Perdue farms etc. so it makes you wonder if they are buying from where all the other pet food companies buy their food sources.

I recently switched my 2 dogs over to EBO red meat from Innova red meat since it was discontinued. A rep from Natura was in my local pet store and recommended EVO red meat as this was the closest match to what they were eating. She even gave me a free 13.2 lb bag. They did well with the switch with no problems.. until this week! I purchased a new bag of food and within a couple of days I noticed my smaller girls poop was green, loose and smelly! She seems to have bladder problem too since on our walk she keeps stopping to pee every few feet! She also vomitted last night. My larger dog also developed the green smelly loose poop a day later. He seems ok otherwise so far….. The bag of food is not on the list. Has an expiration date of 11-7-2013…. Not sure what to switch to!!!!!

How are your dogs doing now? What are you feeding them? It has been three weeks since Koty first got sick and he is just now able to tolerate commercial pet food mixed with oat meal. I changed him back to Nutrisca Chicken and Chickpea formula. It is grain free and he seems to do very well on it. However, I changed over to EVO Weight Management dry because he was putting on weight. What a MISTAKE! That being said, after talking to so many people whom have pets recently sicken after eating commercial pet food and the frightening number of pet items being recalled, due to contamination, in the last several months, I have decided to home cook for my pets. In 2007, my then 3 year old dog and two cats were exposed to Melamine in their pet food. Just like in this case, thier food was on the recall list but the dates were not, so the company denied liability. Thousands of pets died. Who knows, if they had responded differently many others might have been spared. Many pet owners were baffled, myself included, because either their pet food was not on the recall list, or not within the dates range of the recall. Never the less, their pets were very sick with kidney failure and other symptoms of Melamine poisoning. It has been my experience that the pet food industry denies, denies, denies until forced to take responsibility. This is why we need to report to the FDA if our pets became sick after eating this food and have our vets for Salmonella ASP. I don’t want anyone else to go through the awful experience I had in 2007. Three years later after eating contaminated food both cats and my dog died from cancer. Three aditional years have passed, and here I am again. This is it for me! I have completely lost trust in the commercial pet food industry. I feel as if this is a wake-up call for me. I am not going to continue to blindly trust an industry that has historically demonstrated a lack of ethical practices and empathy for my pet’s wellbeing. My vet is on board, I have ordered Susan’s book, Dinner PAWsible: A cookbook for healthy, nutritious meals for cats and dogs and Dr. Pitcairn’s New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Cats and Dogs, both have very good reviews from pet owners. I will start the changeover once I educate myself and my dog is feeling better. The good news is, according to my vet, Salmonella does not have long lasting residual effects. I hope your dogs recover quickly. Please call the FDA!

This is the first recall in the 2.5 years since PG purchased the company. Before that it was run by a family who were fanatics about safety. This problem was not caught by Natura but by the FDA.

PG has cheapened and destroyed this brand just like they did Eukanuba and Iams.

I personally believe that they were sloppy at the plant and everything will be recalled.

I have been feeding my Bengal cats EVO CAT & KITTEN TURKEY & CHICKEN FORMULA for several years and they really love it. Last month I fed one of my cats from one of the recalled bags and he got deathly ill. He lost 1/3 of his body weight within a few weeks, he looked like a dried leaf. He became so sick he could barely walk, had bloody diarrhea, vomiting, was very lethargic – obviously in terrible pain and kept hiding, I couldn’t get him to eat or drink for about a week. I cry myself to sleep because of how he is suffering. It has been a month of this, he is just starting to come around and I have been cooking chicken and turkey for him, it’s the only thing I can get him to eat. So far this has cost me over $900! I feel so bad because I am the one that fed him the poison food : (

GeoC, After 3 grueling months of trying to care for him, my Angel went into convulsions and now he is DEAD from that poison food. EVO still continues to insist that no animals got sick from their food and definitely not my cat. They are nice enough to offer to pay $762 of my over $4000 vet bill if I sign away all rights to further pursue the case. They have been so horrible to me and have made my suffering so much worse by the way they treat me. I think there is more going on then what they are admitting and a very nasty truth is going to eventually come out. They say that no cat has gotten sick from their food but if you look at the different web sites, pet owners are saying something different. We should all get together and pursue this before more innocent pets have to die a horrible and lingering death leaving their owners heartsick : (

Marcia, I can’t tell you how sad and disgusted I am to read your update. How horribly tragic for you and your Angel! So many pets so sickened! And Natura– How dare they? And how do they get away with it?

I know how so many brands are owned by these megalithic organizations with way too much power. It can be difficult to know what you are buying and who you are supporting with your dollars. Thank goodness for people like Susan Thixton who reveal the practices of these corporations and hold them accountable. Such a travesty and tragedy what has happened to our pets with this latest recall!

One of my cats died suddenly last week. I wasn’t aware of him being ill; he was alive when I left for work in the morning, and I found him on the floor that evening. I don’t know what happened, but today I found out about the recall, and I checked the lot # on the bag of Evo Turkey and Chicken that was just finished yesterday, and it was on the list.

So we just found out one of our dogs has IBD and needs to go on a novel single protein source food for a while. I had been looking at California natural venison for a short term choice but am now scared to do so. Does anyone have suggestions for brands that do novel proteins? I refuse to use science diet or royal canin. I thought about natures variety raw but am afraid the possibility of microbes may further ignite his inflamed intestines.
