Concerning Reports about Friskies Cat Food

The local news here in Tampa, FL reported on January 19, 2011 a heartbreaking story of a woman who believes Friskies Cat Food killed her cat. The very next day I received several submissions of pet names to Vindication; four cats died and all were eating Friskies.

The local news here in Tampa, FL reported on January 19, 2011 a heartbreaking story of a woman who believes Friskies Cat Food killed her cat.  The very next day I received several submissions of pet names to Vindication; four cats died and all were eating Friskies.

Below is video from WTSP…

I’ve emailed and left a voice mail message for reporter Mike Deeson, no response yet (sent yesterday 1/20/11).  I do not know if the Pet Owner has reported her cats death to the FDA or to the Florida Department of Agriculture (I’m hoping she has).

And yesterday, 1/20/11, I received numerous submissions of pets to Vindication.  All from the same pet owner…

Muffy, died 11/2010, Pet Owner believes death linked to Friskies Cat Food.
Heaven, died 11/2010, Pet Owner believes death linked to Friskies Cat Food.
Mouse, died 12/2010, Pet Owner believes death linked to Friskies Cat Food.
Bandit, died 12/2010, Pet Owner believes death linked to Friskies Cat Food.

This was startling enough for me; I called the pet owner.  Patricia of Pennsylvania told me her trust of pet food and veterinarians is gone.  She’s spent thousands of dollars in vet bills, lost four cats within a months time.  “In my heart of hearts, it had to be food related”.  All of her cats suffered from kidney failure symptoms prior to their death.  She has spent countless hours researching pet foods since losing her beloved pets, and yes, she’s no longer feeding Friskies.

Patricia hadn’t reported the issue to Purina or the FDA and her State Department of Agriculture.  She shared she felt like it would “not do any good”.  While I certainly understand how she feels, I encouraged her to report the pet illnesses and deaths.

Please Note:  There is no official recall of Purina’s Friskies Cat Food.

Hopefully the FDA, the Florida Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will contact these pet owners and initiate a full investigation.  These Pet Owners certainly deserve some answers.

My heart goes out to all of you who lost your beloved cats. I understand your sorrow and pain and lonliness.. My cat was named Little Zipper. She was 16 years old. She was a beautiful orange and white tiger calico. I named her Zipper because she zipped around real fast as a kitten, and reminded me of the superhero The Flash. I normally fed Zip 9 lives and some other brands her entire life. But never Friskies. She ate a combination of dry cat food and cat meat and always drank plenty of water. She was in great health and was always happy and energetic. She never got sick. I recently bought her some Friskies cat meat because I figured she may like a new treat. She loved the food so I bought her more of it. She recently seemed to be having pain when she went to the bathroom and would start whimpering. I stopped feeding her Friskies but was too late. Zip died last week. I can’t prove Friskies food killed her but considering how healthy she was before I fed her it I think it was the catalyst. Her health diminished rapidly. I raised Little Zip from the day she was born until last Tuesday when she died in my arms 16 years later. She was my best friend and roommate all those years. I am crushed without her. My house feels like a tomb now without her. GOD Bless our beloved furry friends. I share your grief.

Just took my baby girl to the ER. She passed away on my bedroom floor. I fed 2 cats the canned friskies “prime fillets with chicken in gravy”. My Indoor only girl ate it and died. My other indoor only cat would never eat canned food. She is fine. My outdoor only cat refused to eat the canned wet food I gave her this morning. I can only assume she’s okay. I will find out tomorrow.
