Another Bold Message about Pet Food

The headline reads “Extreme cruelty case: Owner feeds garbage to his dog for 15 years!” But they aren’t talking about the type of garbage you are probably thinking of.

The headline reads “Extreme cruelty case:  Owner feeds garbage to his dog for 15 years!”   But they aren’t talking about the type of garbage you are probably thinking of.

The very first sentence explains; “Yes… sorry guys… I know you won’t like to read this but if you are feeding commercial food to your animal that person responsible for extreme cruelty is no other than YOU.”
These strong words were posted on an animal adoption advocacy website based in Turkey.  The post strongly supports a raw food diet, supported by the advice of two veterinarians.  The following is a few quotes from these veterinarians…

Dr. Ian Billinhurst DVM: “As a veterinary student in the early seventies, I found it hard to understand why Aussie vets had fewer and simpler dog and cat diseases to deal with than the Americans.  At that time, more than seventy percent of Aussie dogs were still fed raw bones and scrapes. They were still pretty healthy. American dogs had been eating processed food and no bones for decades. They had developed a wide range of problems. Their vets had been forced to develop a complex set of diagnostic and therapeutic tools to deal with them. I need not have worried. Our dogs’ disease problems are increasing on a par with their increasing consumption of processed and cooked foods.”

Dr. Charles E. Loops DVM:  “Science Diet & Hill’s dog & cat food products are not good diets. They use chemical preservatives that have been shown to cause problems in some animals & they use by-products, which are words on the ingredient label that need to be avoided at all costs.”

I certainly agree that pet foods and treats that contain By-Products, chemical preservatives (such as BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, TBHQ), Animal Fat, Meat and Bone Meal, Meat Meal (not to be confused with Chicken Meal or other meat specific meal), and Animal Digest should be avoided at all costs.  However, in my opinion, there is no ‘one’ way to feed every dog and cat.  The decision of what and how to feed our pets is a personal choice.  There is nothing easy or simple about it.  The only thing we can do is to continue to learn about pet foods and feeding options; our pets deserve that.
